ANDAMAN APRIL 2018

Ultimamente sono un po' in ritardo, ma i ricordi da Aprile sono sempre vivi, una delle più belle settimane di sempre per me alle isole Andaman, ospiti del mio buon amico Akshay, gestore dell'ottimo charter Andamanangler... infatti abbiamo già prenotato per il 2019.

Abbiamo battuto zone conosciute e esplorato spot nuovi, l'attività di superficie dei GT è stata ottima e a jigging abbiamo preso un po' di tutto anche se devo lamentare come al solito la perdita di qualche mostro, tra cui un signor doggy che è stato mangiato in qualcosa di mostruoso a metà di un combattimento impegnativo...

A topwater il popper ha fatto da padrone, con alcune catture a pencil e veramente pochi pesci a stick, cosa strana vista l'acqua calma che avrebbe fatto pensare l'opposto.

I am a bit late updating my blog in recent time, but the memories of our April trip to Andaman are still alive, it has been one of the best weeks ever for me in that destination, fishing with Andamanangler organization of my good friend Akshay, IMHO best choice available there.. and to be safe we've already reserved our week for next year.

We fished familiar spots and also explored new areas, surface activity for GT has been very good and also jigging was very rewarding, with the usual lost fights to deep sea monster.. I especially remember a definitely good specimen of dogtooth that was stolen in one single bite by something huge in the middle of a spirited fight...

On Topwater poppers ruled the scene, with little numbers left to stickbaits, a strange thing in the flat sea conditions we found, but who cares hehe.

COLOMBIA REPORT - BAHIA SOLANO

Un mesetto fa sono rientrato dalla Colombia, dopo essere stato a pesca con due distinti gruppi di amici.
Le condizioni non sono state delle più facili vista l'imprevedibilità del meteo e la migrazione a singhiozzo delle sardine che ha causato momenti di frenesia alternati ad apatia... ma direi che il bilancio è come sempre positivo.
Mancate un po' le cubere, sono state soprattutto le ricciole almaco a movimentare la situazione, oltre al solito miscuglio di pesci costieri e pelagici.
Highlight del trip un marlin nero da 350 libbre che mi ha impegnato per 20 minuti sulla canna da vertical per poi slamarsi in uno spettacolare salto...

One month ago I came back from Colombia after fishing with two different groups of friends.
Fishing conditions were not easy due to unpredictable weather and the intermitting sardine run that created frenzy moments alternated to flat dead calm others; anyway balance is more than positive.
We missed the big cuberas, but we especially enjoyed the almaco jacks activity and the usual mix of coastal and pelagic fishes.
Hightlight of the trip for me was the fight with an extimated 350 lbs black marlin that kept me sweating for 20 minutes on jigging tackle, before throwing the hook in a spectacular jump...

GALAHAD 73/4 LONG FALL JIG ROD BY YAMAGA BLANKS: PART TWO, SECOND TRY

A dicembre scorso avevo pubblicato le prime impressioni su questa canna particolare in questo post , dopo l'esperienza maturata in Guinea Bissau, e mi ero ripromesso di continuare le prove in altri scenari e con altri approcci verticali, dopo la gomma e inchiku/kabura delle prime pescate; occasione trovata in Colombia lo scorso maggio. 

Questa volta ho provato a pescare nel più classico vertical jigging, sia pure in forma leggera viste le condizioni ambientali.

Esche usate metal jigs da 60 a 120 grammi, lavorati principalmente a short jerk.

Le prede non sono mancate, sotto forma di Almaco Jack di buona mole, specie considerando il PE3 in bobina, e qualche pesce minore come snappers e cernie di taglia modesta.

Past december I published my first impressions on this very peculiar rod in another post , soon after the experience I matured in Guinea Bissau, and I promised to myself to try it again in other places and with other fishing approaches, after the softies on jighead and inchiku/kabura of first tries; right occasion happened in Colombia in May.

This time I tried to fish with normal vertical jigging technique, even if in relatively light form due to environmental conditions. I used mostly jigs between 60 to 120 grams in short jerk.

I caught a good number of fishes, mostly almaco jacks of good size, especially considering the PE3 in the reel, and some minor species of snappers and groupers.

L'attrezzo si è trovato perfettamente a suo agio anche con questa presentazione, abbinato con uno Shimano Ocea Jigger 1501HG, mulinello veloce quindi, in particolare l'anellatura montata a spirale ci ha protetto da possibili volte di filo attorno al cimino. Il controllo in combattimento è stato ottimo, anche se ovviamente le tempistiche sono aumentate rispetto agli amici col PE5 con cui condividevo la barca; ottimo backbone per questa classe di filo senza dubbio.

The rod was perfect even with this presentation, paired with a Shimano Ocea jigger 1501HG, a fast reel, spiral montage was especially useful not to have coils of line wrapping on the tip section. Fish control during fisht was very good thanks to the nice backbone for this class of line, even if time was obviously longer than my friends using PE5.

LIGHT JIGGING IN ANDAMAN

Non è un mistero che le  Andaman sono una delle mie destinazioni preferite, e non è un mistero che mi piaccia alternare tecniche di pesca differenti oltre alle solite pesanti... L'ultimo viaggio ad Aprile scorso è stata l'occasione per divertirmi come una scimmia e pescare leggero, con risultati veramente divertenti, qualche bastonata nei denti che ci sta ma soprattutto con un numero e una varietà di catture assolutamente spettacolare.

Andaman Islands are surely among my favourite fishing destinations, and I often like to try new fishing approaches other than the usual heavy popping and jigging... Last April was the right occasion to enjoy light jigging, with very pleasant results, some serious bust off here and there but most of all with a great number and variety of catches.

Il peso dei jig variava mediamente dai 40 ai 90 grammi, jigging light, non microjigging perchè dopotutto ci sono bestie molto serie là sotto; tra i più efficaci IMA Gunpeki, MG Craft Skill Jigs, Duel Tamentai e vari altri.

Jig weight ranged between 40 and 90 grams, it's light jigging and not microjigging because there are some serious beasts down there; most productive models were IMA Gunpeki, MG Craft Skill Jigs, Duel Tamentai and several others.

La canna giusta ha fatto tutta la differenza, vetta sensibile e morbida per manovrare le piccole eche col tocco giusto, e la giusta riserva di potenza per combattere pesci di buona taglia in una corrente abbastanza sostenuta.
L'attrezzo perfetto è stata la Yamagab Blanks Galahad 613S, abbinata a un buon vecchio Twin Power o Stella  5000 carico di PE3 Varivas multicolor. Finale da 70 libbre e piccoli assit proporzionati.

The right rod has made the difference, a tool with a sensitive tip to move teh small lures with the right touch, and a serious backbone to fight good sized fishes in a steady current.
My choice has been the Yamaga Blanks Galahad 613S, paired with old good Twin Power or Stella 5000 filled with multicolor Varivas PE3 braid. 70 lbs leader and small proportioned assist hook to complete the tackle.
 

Le catture sono state di tante specie, vari carangidi, tonni dente di cane, rainbow runner, cerniotte e pesci vari di fondo, snappers, bonitos, ecc

We caught a pletora of different fishes, several jack species, snappers, small dogtooth tunas, rainbow runners, various bottom fishes, snappers, bonitos and so on.
