BICHITO, STORIA DI UN PENCIL

Una delle prime esche che ho costruito per fare fronte a una situazione specifica... c'era una volta, hehe, era il 1997, una spiaggia remota e non turistica in Cuba che termina verso una scogliera frastagliata; nelle acque basse della zona di confine sguazzano spesso banchi di sardine in pochi centimetri d'acqua, protette dall'acqua bassa; ma nel culmine di alta marea, pochi minuti buoni in realtà, il livello aumenta di appena il necessario per consentire ai grossi jack crevalle della zona di attaccare i pescetti foraggio, arrivando velocissimi con metà schiena fuori, quasi fossero delle piccole orche a caccia di foche.
Quello che volevo in quei frangenti era un'esca affusolata che si lanciasse molto lontano e con precisione pur con l'attrezzatura leggera con cui camminavo sulla spiaggia; veloce da lanciare ma anche veloce da lavorare.

This is one of the first lures I built to face a very specific situation... once upon a time hehe, it was 1997, there was a remote beach, in a not touristic place in Cuba, ending toward a rocky shore; in the shallows at the limit between the two environments there is usually a school of sardines swimming, protected by the few inches of water; but at the very top of high tide, the level increase just enough to allow big jack crevalles to slash into the forage with the shoulder well out of the water and almost beaching themselves, like reduced version of killer whales hunting for seals.
What I wanted for those moments was a slim aerodinamic lure that could be casted a long way with the light rod I used to bring with me on the beach, easy to fly and to retrieve in fast fashon.

Eppure non ero soddisfatto dei pencil commerciali, volevo la stessa linea filante, la stessa azione irregolare ma con l'opzione di avere più rumore; ecco quindi che nacque il Bichito nella taglia originale, corpo da 13 cm per 30 grammi, figura da pencil ma bocca da popper; cambiare da un'azione all'altra richiedeva solo alzare più o meno la canna nel recupero.

I wasn't satisfied by the pencils I could find on the market, I wanted the same profile, same erratic action but with the possibility to add more sound and commotion; that is why I carved the Bichito in the original size, body of 13 cm and weight of 30 grams, pencil shape but popper face; changing from one action to another was as simple as raising or lowering the rod. 

Uno dei pochi centri al primo colpo, a tutt'oggi lo produco nella taglia originale, ma ovviamente se ne sono aggiunte molte altre da un minimo attuale di 17 grammi ad un massimo di 160, per insidiare dalla spigola al GT, passando per serra, lampughe, snappers, jack crevalle di tutti gli oceani, emperor, coral trout, ricciole yellowtail, pesci vela... ho perso il conto di tutte le specie prese con questo artificiale.

One of the very few lucky lures to be born and satisfy me at first try; today I still build the original size, but of course many more have been aded to the array, from minimum of 17 grams to a max of 160, to target anything from seabass to GT, including bluefish, mahi, snappers, jack crevalles of every ocean, emperors, coral trouts, yellowtail kingfishes, sailfishes... I lost count of all the species I caught on this lure.

Entrando nel dettaglio si tratta di un'esca di legno, trattato e rifinito come da abitudine per affrontare ogni situazione; anche in taglia piccola non ha paura dei grandi predatori, l'armatura passante chiusa in acciaio inox Aisi 316 porta a casa qualunque preda, il limite lo fanno solo gli ami che gli mettiamo o la lenza a cui lo leghiamo.
Insomma, possiamo tranquillamente fare un GT con un'esca da serra come nella foto sotto ...

Entering in the construction, it is made with selected premium wood, treated and sealed like I usually do to withstand any situation; even in small size it doesn't fear big predators, the closed through wire made with Aisi 316 inox steel wire can bring home any fish, the limit is made only by the hooks that we mount on it or by the line we knot it to.
We can easily fish a GT with a lure meant for bluefish like in the pic below...

Trucchi per l'uso? La fantasia... E' a suo agio a mare piatto come a mare mosso, ci si può fare WTD come recuperarlo a missile di mulinello a canna bassa per avere un tunnel di bolle molto pronunciato; a canna alta diventa un pencil popper più classico, o addirittura uno skipping lure, ma abbiamo sempre l'opzione di rallentare al volo e dare due "poppate" per quel pesce che lo sta tallonando da alcune decine di metri...

Any trick and tip? use your fantasy... It works equally well on flat sea like in teh waves, we can do WTD on or retrieve it like a missile with just reel and low rod tip to obtain an impressive bubble trail; with high rod it becomes the classic pencil or even a skipping lure, but we can always slow down the retrieve and pop hard a couple times to trigger that big one that is following from long distance.

Dove? In blue water come sul reef, come dalla scogliera o dalla spiaggia, situazione quest'ultima che l'ha visto nascere.

Where? In blue water or on the reef, from rocky shore or from the beach, this last being the situation that saw its birth.

Una piacevole curiosità, i primi esemplari che il mio amico Boris ha portato a Kerè, Guinea Bissau, posto del quale mi sarei poi innamorato pure io, fecero una così buona impressione a Laurent, proprietario e gestore del lodge, che ne volle alcuni per creare due piccole bacheche a ornamento del bar, sicuramente un piacere ed un'onore imprevisto all'epoca.

As a curious story, some of first speciment I gave to my friend Boris for a Kerè trip in Guinea Bissau, a place I later learnt to love, worked so good that Laurent, owner and founder of the lodge, wanted some for a little glass box to decorate te bar, surely an unexpected and very pleasant honour for me at that time.

Altre sfide aspettano il Bichito, per ora si è fatto valere dal Mediterraneo all'Atlantico, dalla East Coast statunitense anna Nuova Caledonia, ma non è sicuramente finita qui...

Other challenges await my Bichito for sure, up to now it has earned its success from Mediterranean to Atlantic to Pacific ocean, from US east coast to New Caledonia, but surely it all will not end here.

STICKBAIT PER IL TONNO .... TUNA STICKBAITS

Una rapida rassegna dopo tre anni di utilizzo in varie condizioni e relativamente ai mari della nostra penisola, soprattutto l'Adriatico centro settentrionale.
Molti ne abbiamo provati, abbiamo scelto i preferiti e i più affidabili, talvolta per risultati esplosivi in breve tempo, talvolta per costanza nel lungo periodo, talvolta come arma di situazione per condizioni particolari... vediamoli insieme:

A quick review after three years of use in various conditions in the seas surrounding Italy, more oftern the central-northern Adriatic sea.
We tested many models, and we ended choosing our preferred ones, the most dependable, sometimes for explosive results in short time, sometimes for constancy in the long period, sometimes like special weapon for unusual situations.... let's take a look:

Nature Boys Surfish Tuna.

180 mm per 90 grammi, affondante, plastica cava, armatura passante.
Un generico per ogni situazione e dalla resa ottima, messo in acqua non è che impressioni molto per il suo movimento, ma la costanza e abbondanza di risultati dimostra che i tonni la pensano in modo diverso da noi. Peccato solo la poca reperibilità dovuta a una produzione saltuaria.

180 mm, 90 grams, sinking, hollow plastic, through wire.
An allround lure with a very good track record, in the water doesn't strike our eye for his limited movement, but constant and abundant results show us that the tuna don't think the same way we do. A pity it's not always easy to find due to an inconstant production.

Tre misure per questo stick affondante in legno costruito in Giappone, armatura ovviamente passante.

Lo stiamo usando da poco ma con risultati ottimi e a volte eccezionali; le prime due taglie vanno benissimo quando il tonno mangia piccolo e la 150 è una perfetta esca allround.

L'imitatività di questi artificiali è eccellente e convince spesso anche i tonni più sospettosi

We've been using it for short time but with excellent results; the two smaller sizes are perfect when tuna are selective on small forage, the 150 size is a classical allround.

The imitative capacity of these lures are fantastic, and they often trigger strikes by the most wary tunas.

Ottimo e versatile, con un movimento estremamente convincente e facile da utilizzare, un must nella cassetta.

Maria Loaded 140S

140 mm per 55 gr, affondante, plastica cava con armatura passante.

Valido ed economico, perfetto per iniziare anche se la plastica non si rivela delle più robuste, va bene per attrezzature non troppo pesanti.

140 mm and 55 grams, sinking with plastic hollow body, through wire construction.

Good and cheap, perfect to begin but the plastic body it's not very strong, it's ok with medium weight tackle.

Heru Bobara

Due taglie disponibili valide per il tonno, ve ne sarebbe anche una terza più grande ma la lasciamo ai GT; costruiti artigianalmente in Indonesia, legno, armatura passante, affondanti.

-50 gr per 14.5 cm

-100 gr per 18.5 cm

Esca dal movimento molto vivace in grado di scatenare abboccate di tonni svogliati, molto valida sia in mangianza che in caccia.

A lure with very active movement, able to trigger stikes from inactive fishes, perfect in the frenzies but also while blind casting.

Un gioiello artigianale dagli Stati Uniti, estremamente imitativo e credibile in acqua grazie alla cura dei dettagli e ad un movimento particolarmente convincente, una delle esche a cui ricorrere quando i tonni non ne vogliono sapere delle nostre imitazioni e vogliamo essere il più realistici possibile.

22 cm and 90 grams, slow sinking, resin construction, through wire.

A custom jewel from United States, very imitative in the water thanks to the detailed finish and a very convincing movement; one of the lures to resort when tuna don't want to strike our lures and we want to exactly "match the hatch".

 Due taglie disponibili, costruzione in plastica cava con armatura passante, galleggiante.

-16 cm per 58 gr

-19 cm per 88 gr

Lo abbiamo trovato abbastanza facile da usare, contrariamente a altre recensioni, ricorda un po' il Loaded di Maria ma è decisamente più robusto, anche se le ancorette sarebbero da sostituire secondo noi.

Ha un uso un po' particolare di "caccia", da usare attorno alle mangianze di foraggio molto piccolo a imitazione di un piccolo predatore concorrente ( tecnica che funziona spesso con gli esemplari grandi di tonno ), oppure alla cieca intorno a punti di raduno come piattaforme, relitti e altri spot. Ovviamente va anche molto bene per imitare foraggio di taglia, in particolare muggini sul taglio di corrente fuori dalle foci importanti.

In condizioni di poca luminosità si è rivelata catturante la volorazione viola-oro.

We found it quite easy to use in spite to other web review; it reminds to the Maria Loaded but it's quite more strong, we suggest to change the treble hooks.

We used it like a "hunting" stickbait, perfect aroud the very small sardine balls to imitate a little predatory fish to trigger reaction strikes ( an approach that often works with big specimen of tuna ), or in blind casting around interesting spots like gas rigs, wrecks and other spots.

Of course it's also very good to imitate big size forage fishes, speciphically mullets around current breaks outside river mouths.

In low visibility situations the gold-purple color has shown to be very effective.

Commenti e situazioni di uso sono più o meno gli stessi dell'Orca di poco sopra; sicuramente un ottimo artificiale.

Comments and use are more or less the same than Orca above, for sure an excellent lure.

Shimano Ocea Pencil BFT 185 

 

18.5 cm per 88 gr, plastica cava, armatura passante, galleggiante.

E' la versione grande e floating del fratellino 150; come lui molto mobile e facile da usare pur con assetto differente. Perfetto per gli stessi scenari dell'Orca, con un movimento differente e plasmabile che talvolta risulta più adescante a seconda delle preferenze dei tonni; vale la pena avere entrambi.

18.5 cm and 88 grams, hollow plastic, through wire, floating.

It's the bigger brother of the 150; very mobile and easy to use but with a different asset. It's perfect for the same scenario in which we suggest the Orca, but, having a different beat and movement sometimes it gives difeerent results, it depends on the preference of the tunas; we suggest to carry both model with you.

Noi consigliamo le due taglie più piccole

E' molto affusolato e leggero, cosa che lo rende da un lato fragile ma dall'altro estremamente adescante nel movimento; la finitura è di una brillantezza unica.

E' difficile da reperire e molto costoso, ma può cambiare la giornata dato che in certe situazioni cattura solo lui; vedete voi se il vostro tempo e divertimento e i soldi del pieno della barca possono venire compensati dalle doti di questo artificiale. Per noi un'"arma segreta" da portare sempre.

We suggest the two smallest sizes.

It's very thin and light, and that makes it fragile but extremely mobile and convincing; the shine of the finish is unmatched.

It's diffcult to find and expensive, but it can change your day as sometimes it's the only lure that elicits a strike; your choice to evaluate if your time and amusement, and the fuel consumpion ofthe day, can be compensated by the value of this stick. For us it's a "secret weapon" to always carry.

Those models are not the only ones we used, we found good ones and bad ones, including some very spammed model. We also kept some little secrets for ourselves for now..... the overview it's far from completed.

DORADO E BICHITO BY ALLE'S LURES

-Il bichito, un piccolo pencil popper da 30 grammi che in Mediterraneo si è rivelato molto efficace con pesci serra, lecce e lampughe:

è un artificiale che si presta a una gran varietà di recuperi, dal classico "pencil retrieve" veloce in superficie, al wtd al recupero da popper a strappetti, oltre ovviamente a tutte le loro combinazioni.

costruito a prova di bisonte come il precedente, è più adatto per recuperi veloci per predatori aggressivi; nasce per la lampuga, ma è risultato efficace con tutti i pelagici e i pesci serra, oltre che a una serie lunghissima di pesci tropicali.
