WOLF FISH TRIP IN BRASIL, REPORT

Tanto tempo che volevo andare a pescare i Trairao, avrei voluto in primis tornare in Guyana Francese, ma la voglia di provare un luogo differente ha prevalso ed eccoci in Mato Grosso, per la precisione presso il Rancho Serra do Cachimbo, una stupenda realtà brasiliana.
Arrivarci non è stato facilissimo, un volo Bologna-Roma-San Paolo con Alitalia, che spero di evitare in futuro, volo interno con Azul fino a Cuiabà, capitale dello stato, e poi altro voletto su Sinop... appena atterrati un buon churrasco, la carne sarà un motivo fisso di tutta la settimana, e poi 4 ore di macchina fino alla nostra destinazione finale.
Il lodge, o posada come la chiamano in loco, è splendido, l'accoglienza top level e il cibo veramente ottimo, già questo basta a metterci di ottimo umore; ma è l'intrico di lagune e bracci di fiume che si vedono a 20 metri da noi che alimenta l'entusiasmo.

I've been planning to go fishing for trairaos for long time, I would have liked to go back to French Guyana, but I also was tempted to try new places so here we are in Mato Grosso, specifically at Rancho Serra do Cachimbo , a wonderful reality in Brazil.
It has been a long trip to arrive there, a bad flight with Alitalia from Bologna to San Paolo, other flight to Cuiabà, the state capital, and another one to Sinop. After a good churrasco that wellcomed us, other 4 hours of road and we arrived to our final destination.
The lodge, locally called posada , is very beautiful and well kept, hospitality and confort are top level and food is great; all this surely boost our entusiasm, but not as it does the view of the lagoons right in front of us.

L'ambiente è bellissimo, un fiume importante ha creato un lago a seguito di uno sbarramento, inondando pianure erbose e creando un dedalo di canali dall'acqua insolitamente limpida per situazioni simili. Alberi sia morti che vivi sorgono dal mezzo delle lagune e i fondali sono costellati di tronchi sommersi, regno degli ambiti Trairao che qui non hanno alcun predatore in concorrenza, salvo forse i caimani locali.
E' il paradiso del pescatore di bass, anche perchè i pesci sono assolutamente abbondanti e presenti quasi ovunque, anche se questo non significa che siano di facile cattura.

Environment is very nice, a serious river has been blocked by a barrage and inundated the nearby plains, creating a labyrinth of lagoons and channels with very transparent water.
Dead and living trees grow everywhere in the middle of water and on the banks, and the bottom is full of sunken logs that create perfect hideouts for our beloved trairaos; they have no other predators to compete with apart the elusive caimans.
This is heaven for bass minded fisherman, plenty of fishes everywhere but that doesn't mean they are too easy to catch.

La fauna del luogo si fa intravvedere spesso sulle sponde e in cielo, armadilli, capibara, scimmie e onnipresenti pappagalli sono visioni comuni, mentre caimani e anaconda restano invece nascosti ma ben presenti.

Local fauna can be often spotted on the banks and the air, capibaras, armadillos, monkeys and ubiquitous parrots are common sights, while caimans and anacondas are shy even if present in good numbers.

Ma a noi interessa di più la fauna ittica :D

But maybe I am more interested in acquatic fauna :D

Come presentazioni i topwater eccellono alle prime e ultime ore del giorno, walking sticks, poppers, propellers e crawler recuperati non troppo veloci ottengono attacchi brutali, mentre nelle ore di luce alta gli spinnerbait la fanno da padrone, seguiti da swimbait, jerkbait, qualche gomma e qualche jig.
Con minnow e crank poca fortuna, non perchè non fossero adescanti, ma perchè gli attacchi su esche molto dinamiche risultavano quasi sempre in pessimi agganci in quelle bocche durissime, con conseguenti slamate durante i molteplici salti.

Best presentations are topwater at first and las hours of the day; walking sticks, poppers, propellers and crawlers have all their place; when slowly retrieved along obstacles and vegetation they produce brutal attacks. During sunlight hours spinnerbaits are number one choice, followed by swimbaits, jerkbaits, some plastic and some jigs.
With crankbaits and minnows we had bad luck; they were attractive to the fishes but we couldn't get solid hookups due to the mouth conformation of fishes, and almost all the strikes on dynamic lures resulted in a thrown hook during jumps.

Altro problema oltre alle slamate sono stati gli ami rotti, gli spinner distrutti e le ancorette aperte da quei piccoli draghi... è incredibile come basti a volte un pesce da un paio di chili a distruggere uno spinnerbait nuovo o aprire un 7/0 da saltwater.

Another problem was the number of broken spinners and opened hooks by these little dragons .... it is incredible how just a 2 kilos fish can destroy a new spinnerbait or straighten a 7/0 saltwater hook.

Peccato sia mancato il mostro, anche se gli amici Hristiyan e Peter hanno preso bei pesci, il mio max è stato 13 libbre, pesce onesto ma ben lontano dai mostri mangia iguane di queste acque... torneremo di sicuro a cercarli.
E' un pesce che da decisamente dipendenza, con la sua difesa violenta, i salti apparentemente impossibili vista la forma tozza, i denti da dinosauro e l'indole aggressiva.
Senza dimenticare il confort del dopo pesca, cene eccellenti a base di carne locale, dolci e ottima birra, cose alle quali sono sempre sensibile :)
Poche le foto di tutto ciò, ma in quei frangenti mi dimentico la macchinetta :D

I missed the monster, my best one weighted 13 pounds on the boga, but my friends Peter and Hristyian had some better fishes, but we didn't touch the local iguana-eating monsters... we will be back to search for them for sure.
Trairao is an addictive fish, with its violent defence, the frequent jumbs despite its bulky size, dinosaur teeth and mean attitude.
Not to forget about after fishing confort, excellent dinners of local meat, sweets and good beer, and I am very sensitive to those things so that I often forget to take pictures :D

ANDAMAN APRIL 2018

Ultimamente sono un po' in ritardo, ma i ricordi da Aprile sono sempre vivi, una delle più belle settimane di sempre per me alle isole Andaman, ospiti del mio buon amico Akshay, gestore dell'ottimo charter Andamanangler... infatti abbiamo già prenotato per il 2019.

Abbiamo battuto zone conosciute e esplorato spot nuovi, l'attività di superficie dei GT è stata ottima e a jigging abbiamo preso un po' di tutto anche se devo lamentare come al solito la perdita di qualche mostro, tra cui un signor doggy che è stato mangiato in qualcosa di mostruoso a metà di un combattimento impegnativo...

A topwater il popper ha fatto da padrone, con alcune catture a pencil e veramente pochi pesci a stick, cosa strana vista l'acqua calma che avrebbe fatto pensare l'opposto.

I am a bit late updating my blog in recent time, but the memories of our April trip to Andaman are still alive, it has been one of the best weeks ever for me in that destination, fishing with Andamanangler organization of my good friend Akshay, IMHO best choice available there.. and to be safe we've already reserved our week for next year.

We fished familiar spots and also explored new areas, surface activity for GT has been very good and also jigging was very rewarding, with the usual lost fights to deep sea monster.. I especially remember a definitely good specimen of dogtooth that was stolen in one single bite by something huge in the middle of a spirited fight...

On Topwater poppers ruled the scene, with little numbers left to stickbaits, a strange thing in the flat sea conditions we found, but who cares hehe.
