WEEDLESS JIGS FOR BIG PREDATORS

La mia storia di pescatore  spinning è nata col bass, quello largemouth per capirci, tanti anni fa, il primo contatto con i classici jigs da flipping e pitching si perde negli anni '80 ed è stato subito amore per la capacità di arrivare ovunque, specialmente nel fitto degli ostacoli, e la propensione per attrarre pesci di taglia. Oltre ai bass si fecero presto vivi i lucci e qualche altro pesce occasionale.
Con l'arrivo del siluro l'uso di tale artificiale mi ha dato subito soddisfazioni, ma anche difficoltà legate agli ami generalmente piccoli e leggeri di cui erano armati i classici, non adatti spesso a combattere pesci di taglia notevole.

My fishing career as lure tosser was born with the Black Bass, the largemouth one, many years ago and first contact with flipping and pitching jigs dates back to the 80s; I soon loved them as they can reach everywhere especially in wood and weeds, and because of their appeal to big size fishes.
Not only bass as pikes were quickly in the game, big sizes too, and some other very occasional fish.
When wels catfishes became well present in our waters I soon used the jig to target them; I had lot of catches but also some difficulties and lost big fishes due to the relatively light and small hooks in a lure projected for other tasks.

Si trattava di trovare quei pochi modelli con amo oversize e magari pesi fino all'oncia o più, ed ho risolto con le testine Jigzilla della Gambler, da dressare con skirt a piacere, uno o due a seconda del volume che vogliamo ottenere; in foto si può vedere la differenza con la testina tradizionale seppure armata di 5/0.

I had to search for very few models with oversized hooks and I finally solved with Gambler Jigzilla heads, to be dressed with one or two skirts depending on the volume we need; in the pic below the difference with a "big" 5/0 bass jighead is evident.

Il trailer gioca spesso un ruolo determinante, a seconda delle situazioni i pesci preferiscono nettamente una vibrazione e un volume differente, le mie scelte vanno dal classico shad, adoro i Keitech Swing Impact Fat da 5.8", ai grub sia a coda singola che doppia, alle creature, le mie preferite quelle di Gary Yamamoto, a, talvolta, vermi dritti e piatti.

Trailer choice is fundamental, depending on situations fishes prefere different vibrations and size, my choices span from the classic shad tails , Keitech Swing Impact Fat in 5.8" size is my fav, to single or twin tailed grubs, to creatures, love the Gary Yamamoto one, to, sometimes, big straight and flat worms.

Peso della testa, quantità di skirt e dimensione del trailer li scelgo in relazione al tipo di recupero che voglio, se un'azione di nuoto a mezz'acqua o caduta lenta o se un'azione di bottom tumping ovvero recupero attivo a contatto del fondo ove l'esca si alza e cade impattando gli ostacoli in modo rumoroso. Anche l'aggiunta di un rattler, sia esterno che interno alla soft plastic è una cosa che valuto di volta in volta a seconda dell'attività dei pesci, della sospettosità degli stessi e  del colore dell'acqua.

Head weight, bulkness of skirt and size of the trailer are choosen depending the type of retrieve I want, from midwater swim, slow fall or active bottom bumping with heavy and noisy impacts on the rocks and sand. Adding a trailer is an option too, either external or hidden in the soft plastic; just consider it well depending on level of activity and waryness of the fishes and color of the water.

Oltre ai soliti noti escono spesso specie inaspettate che attaccano aggressivamente il jig, nelle mie acque in particolare barbi europei e aspi.

I caught more species on them beside the usual suspects, with asps and barbels frequent on my line while looking for cats.

Come attrezzatura per me canna da casting tutta la vita, Yamaga Blanks Glazer e Xtremo abbinate a Shimano Scorpion 1501 o Curado 301, trecciato da almeno 40 libbre e terminale in nylon morbido da 100 libbre circa per resistere alle abrasioni del fondale.

My tackle of choice is baitcasting, of course, for me Yamaga Blanks Glazer and Xtremo paired with Shimano Scorpion 1501 and Curado 301 are  perfect; braid of at least 40 lbs and nylon leader of about 100 lbs to withstand bottom and obstacle abrasion.

Di recente sto sperimentando questo approccio con i predatori esotici, per ora voto positivo col trairao, mi riservo di provarlo anche con barramundi, papuan bass, snakehead e pesci gatto di varie razze.. vedremo, stay tuned.

SERIOUS HOOKS ON SMALL LURES FOR CASTING GAME ?

Argomento difficile, non è una situazione da tutti i giorni dover lanciare piccole esche con attrezzatura pesante nell'ordine delle 40-80 libbre, a parte forse la pesca al tonno, meno che meno con attrezzatura da casting.

Tricky topic, not an everyday situation to have to cast small lures with heavy tackle up to PE6, with the exception maybe of tuna fishing, even more unusual with baitcasting tackle.

Mi ci sono trovato spesso pescando nelle mangrovie di Cuba a snook e snappers, o, un mesetto fa, in Papua insidiando barramundi e niugini bass, come pure nelle acque di casa per insidiare i siluri.
Dato per assodato che la maggior parte di crankbait e topwater adatti a questo giochino nascono per altri pesci, e di conseguenza sono dotati di ancorette decisamente deboli per le nostre intenzioni, non è sempre facile trovare dei sostituti extrastrong: troppo grandi e pesanti e roviniamo l'azione dell'artificiale, non abbastanza tosti e cederanno sotto le trazioni violente delle prede.

It happened to me while fishing Cuban mangroves for snooks and snappers, or a month ago in PNG to search for barramundi and black bass, and even in my home waters when after wels catfish..
Considering that most crankbaits and topwaters suitable for these games are in reality projected for less demanding fishing actions, it is normal they sport way too weak hooks for our targets, and it is not always easy to find X-strong replacements: too big and heavy and lure action is ruined, not strong enough and they will fail under heavy pull.

In situazioni non troppo estreme mi sono trovato bene con vari modelli di ancorette, Owner ST66, Gamakatsu SPXH, BKK RaptorZ tra tutti; però, oltre il limite delle 50 libbre e con bocche particolarmente robuste ho avuto aperture a ripetizione di detti modelli.

In not too extreme cases, several models of trebles have done a good job for me: Owner ST66, Gamakatsu SPXH, BKK RaptorZ among my favorites; but beyond the limit of about 50 lbs braid and with fishes with hard and powerful mouths, they too often opened up.

Necessario quindi ripiegare sugli ami singoli, meglio con occhiello inline. Ho usato spesso i Decoy JS1, Owner S-125 Plugging Singles, Gamakatsu 55BL e di recente BKK Diablo.
A parità di peso e ingombro la struttura del singolo è risultata decisamente più robusta e difficile da aprire.

I have been obliged to resort to single hooks, inline models worked best for me. I used often Decoy JS1, Owner S-125 Plugging Singles, Gamakatsu 55BL and more recently BKK Diablo hooks.
Considering same weight and presence of trebles, the single hook structure is a lot stronger and hard to open.

Su esche particolarmente ridotte e volendo comunque un amo grande, ho talvolta risolto armando solo la coda, per i siluri ha funzionato molto bene, per altri pesci mi riservo ulteriori prove.

When I wanted to use very small lures and a relatvely big hook, like when chasing catfishes, I sometimes used just one single in the tail rather than two of them on both eyelets... I just want to test more this solution with other species of fishes.

Non tutti comunque mi hanno parimenti soddisfatto e quelle che riporto sono le mie personalissime considerazioni emerse in pesca; non amo molto la struttura dei Decoy ( e di tutti quelli che si rifanno a tale forma ), trovo che sia piuttosto scarso come capacità di allamata rispetto agli altri per la posizione troppo disassata dell'occhiello; discorso analogo per gli owner che si comportano un po' meglio ma hanno forse un'ampiezza disponibile alla ferrata un po' troppo limitata; molto molto validi i Gama, forse i miei preferiti, anche in virtù dell'assenza di ardiglione; risultati molto buoni anche con i BKK, la cui curva ampia unita all'occhiello ridotto mi hanno consentito ottime ferrate.

Anyway, not all the mentioned models have been equally satisfactory, but consider what I write as the fruit of very personal considerations based on my own experience.; I don't love much Decoy structure ( and of other brands with same shape ), I feel it doesn't hook very well compared to others, maybe due to the out of line eye that oblige the hook to a strange angle; similar thing for S-125, a little better hooking but with relatively small gap to bite in the fish jaws; the Gama  have resulted very good, possibly my favorites, and being barbless I consider this a positive plus; and I had really positive results with Diablos that have a nice combination between ample curve and small eye that allow for very good hookups.

A conti fatti il rapporto di strike/catture portate a termine è stato decisamente superiore con i giusti singoli rispetto alle ancorette, dubito che tornerò indietro in futuro.

All considerated, the strike to catch ratio has been a lot better with the right singles, and I doubt I will be backward on this path in future.

Again barra with BKK, small one just pinned on tip of jaw, but it held.

PUSHING THE LIMIT ON SMALL WATERS

"Fossing addiction" l'abbiamo definita scherzosamente tra amici... "inglesizzando" il caro vecchio fosso vicino a casa.
Sempre saputo ci fossero i siluri, ma non in questi numeri e taglie, e mano mano che sposto l'asticella verso l'alto resto sorpreso da come pesci di tale mole possano vivere in un ambiente limitato pur convivendo con diverse altre specie.
Da quanto ho osservato il territorio di tali esemplari comprende un lungo tratto di fiume, talvolta anche un paio di km, o almeno questa è la sensazione; si muovono e cambiano posizione a seconda dei momenti, capita di vederli pinneggiare tranquilli e completamente inattivi in 70 cm di acqua limpida, nemmeno fossero trote. E sotto il loro dominio i baffoni di taglia inferiore, parecchio inferiore, sono tollerati ma si collocano in posizioni particolari...
Quanto all'alimentazione, se il piccino si abbuffa di gamberi e pesciame, il grosso per quanto ho visto vomitare, adora il pesce di taglia e gli uccelli acquatici come le gallinelle.... chissà che bollate!! E devo notare che sono quasi spariti i ratti... tutte osservazioni empiriche e superficiali ovviamente.
Quindi, prossima missione, topwater!

E forse sarà il caso di valutare una canna più potente della mia cara Glazer 60H.... o no? Col mostro se l'è cavata...

GUIDING FOR CATFISHES ON LURES WITH A FRIEND FROM GERMANY

This post will be in English only, as I think it will be of more interest to foreing people visiting Italy than the common italian angler.

I've been searching for alternative playgrounds and perfecting unusual approach to wels catfishes for several years, more intensely in the last two, and kept posting the progresses on several media and socials just to share the experience.
At a point my pictures moved some good interest by foreing friends and I received more than a request by fishermen from several european country to guide them fishing with me.

Last request was from friend Hristyian who already followed me in the past to several tropical destinations; a quick plan and he bought the flight ticket from Dusseldorf to Verona, my home town ( or Romeo and Juliet one, but that's another history :D ) for a long weekend.

Apart than the obvious and easily predictable joys of local cousine and sightseeing, alone enough to justify the travel, fishing went pretty well, with two very good days targeting the whiskered critters in relatively small and shallow waters.

It's a very emotional kind of fishing, as the strike is often very vicious with cats breaking and slapping the surface of the water with their big tails; fising is usually done in small river tributaries, with water depth from 50 cm to two meters, and a big beast can do plenty of confusion when roaming that shallows in attemp to escape.

Well, too many words, better let the pictures talk...

 

 

All fishing is done with relatively light tackle, I use and supply Yamaga Blanks Glazer rods in the 1 oz 1/4 and 1 oz 1/2 models, in both baitcasting and spinning setup, a real blast when a big one is hooked.
No giants of 100 kgs here as the waters are small and what makes everything exciting is the "hunting" approach... for the truly big ones I've other waters to fish in ...

SMALL WATER CATFISH

Ultimamente mi sono divertito a cercare siluri in piccoli canali con discreta corrente e parecchia vegetazione acquatica; pesci non giganti mediamente tra i 10 e i 30 chili anche se le grosse sorprese possono essere dietro l'angolo specialmente a metà primavera quando i grossi pesci risalgono dal corso principale per la riproduzione.

These past months I enjoyed looking for wels catfishes in some small streams with good current and a lot of weed; the average fish is between 10 and 30 kilos, but big surprises can happen, especially in the middle of the Spring when big specimens come from the main waters to spawn.

Ovviamente non è posto per pesci da 100 kg per cui va benone un'attrezzatura media con ottima riserva di potenza, canna Yamaga Blanks Glazer 60H da casting, un validissimo Shimano Scorpion 1501XT robusto e affidabile nonostante la taglia e il costo ridotti e che mi ha fatto divertire anche con gli snakehead, trecciato bello grezzo da 60 libbre per fare fronte all'eventuale abrasione.

Of course we will not find 100 kilos fishes, so the right choice is a medium class outfit with a lot of backbone, the rod I choosed is the Yamaga Blanks Glazer 60H in baicasting model, the reel a affordable and strong Shimano Scorpion 1501XT that accompanied me also in snakehead fishing, and a good 60 lbs braid to withstand to the abrasion of environment.

 

Non è facile fare nuotare i crankbait tra i filoni di alghe mossi dalla corrente e sotto i quali si appostano i baffoni, per cui la scelta migliore come artificiale finora sono risultati i jigs da bass in taglie leggermente sovradimensionate per la profondità che varia dai 50 cm ai due metri; pesi quindi da 1/2 a 1 oncia, arricchiti con trailer molto voluminosi come lo Swing Impact Fat di keitech da 5.8" o la Yamamoto Kreature da 4". Per i colori non ho visto particolari preferenze anche se ho sempre cercato di dare un po' di contrasto con le acque velate, quindi mi sono trovato bene con bianco, giallo, nero e loro combinazioni.
Ho anche ottenuto ottimi risultati impiegando una frog bait ( la Molix Frog con gambine in silicone ) in modo insolito, ovvero dietro una testina piombata senza amo che mi sono fuso personalmente e ho arricchito con uno skirt colorato... i siluri hanno gradito molto questo strano jig, tanto da ingoiarlo profondamente in diverse occasioni... da approfondire

This is not the place to swim a crankbait, too many weed mats that swing in the current, and the cats  hide just under, so the lure that has worked better for me has been the weedless bass jig in a size slightly heavier than the dept of 50 cm to 2 meters could suggest; the trick is to bump it agressively along the bottom and in many cases to penetrate the vegetation; chosen weights ranged between 1/2 oz and a full ounce, paired with big voluminous trailer like 5.8" Keitech Swing Impact Fat or 4" Yamamoto Kreature. About colors I haven't seen special preferences but I always tried to accentuate the contrast with the slightly murky water, so white, yellow, black and their combination have worked well for me.
I've also had very good results pairing a soft frog ( Molix Frog ) joined behind a custom made hookless jighead to form a very particular jig; cats loved this combo so much that they often swallowed it deep.... worth more experiments.

It's a nice way to spend a couple hours near home, with lot of catches on some days.
