CUBA - ISLA DE LA JUVENTUD SUL GEORGIANA

Ecco il report del nostro viaggio di Marzo, abbiamo esplorato le acque comprese tra la Isla de la Juventud e Cayo Largo.

Here's the report of our March trip exploring the waters between Island of youth and Cayo Largo in Cuba.

I luoghi sono vari, dal canale di mangrovie regno di snook e snappers alle flat erbose popolate di bonefish a quelle sabbiose terreno di caccia dei barracuda, per non parlare del reef popolato da grandi cubere e delle acque profonde da affrontare a jigging.

We fished in various environments, from mangrove creeks populated by snooks and snappers to grass flats with their bonefishes, to sandy ones partolled by cudas, deep reef with big cuberas and deep waters to be fished with heavy jigging tackles.

Il canale di mangrovie, affrontato con attrezzatura light ma non troppo, PE3, Ripple Fisher Aquila 743 e piccoli topwater o esche di gomma su jighead:

Le flat popolate dai cari bhonefish, piccole jighead da 1-2 grammi e canna da ajing della Yamaga Blanks Blue Current 78M , PE 0.6 e tanta precisione, divertentissimi.

Grass flats hosted nice bonefishes, very funny to be fished with ajing tackle, Yamaga Blanks Blue Current 78M, 1-2 grams jigheads and PE 0.6... a real hunt.

Una delle pesche più divertenti è quella al barracuda a vista in acque bassissime con piccoli topwater, baby dorado e needlefish by Alle's Lures e canne sia molto leggere come la Yamaga Blanks Ballistic 73WC abbinata a PE 0.8, sia un po' più pesanti come la classica blue Sniper 70/3

Great fun catching barracuda on sight fishing in shallow waters, usually on small topwaters like needlefish and baby dorado by Alle's Lures and very light rod like Yamaga Ballistick 73WC or heavier one like the classic Blue sniper 70/3

Poi il reef coi bestioni che spesso hanno vinto le sfide più dure, canna PE8 come la Blue Reef 710/8 di Yamaga o la GT82LC di Ripple Fisher e grossi stickbait come il Valmar da 130 grammi.

The reef had to be fished with PE 8 class tackle like Yamaga Blue Reef 710/8 and Ripple Fisher GT82LC, big stickbait like Valmar 130 grams, but we still lost some of the worst battles.

E da ultimo il jigging, con le sue solite sorprese e catture inaspettate, PE8 a causa delle cernie giganti, anche se questa volta non ci hanno fatto visita, e l'indispensabile cavo d'acciaio visto l'elevata presenza di dentature affilatissime.

And for last jigging, with PE8, due to the presence of enormous groupers, and the mandatory wire leader because of the heavy presence of terrible toothy mouths.

TOMAN OF TAMENGGOR

Un veloce fotoreport di un piacevole viaggio in Malesia alla ricerca del Toman, ovvero del Giant Snakehead, un pesce particolare tanto nelle abitudini che nell'aspetto che nella pesca.
Ho avuto il piacere di affiancare pescatori locali e di provare in anteprima alcuni prototipi e alcni modelli in prossima uscita della Yamaga Blanks, tanta roba devo dire!

A quick photoreport of a pleasant trip to Malaysia in search of the Toman, aka Giant Snakehead, a very singular fish in shape, habits and fishing tactics.
I've had the pleasure to join some local fishermen ant to try some prototypes and some rods of next presentations by Yamaga Blanks, fantastic new tools!

Il posto è il lake Tamenggor a tre ore circa di macchina dall'aeroporto di Penang, un lago artificiale creato da una diga circa quarantanni fa e che ha inondato una parte della fittissima jungla malesiana, ancora regno di tigri, elefanti e altra fauna esotica.

The location is Lake Tamenggor, distant about three hours of car from the Penang airport; it's a reservoir born by a dam created more than 40 years ago; the waters have inundated part of the nearby jungle, that now is still refuge of tigers, elephants and other exotic species.

Unico problema gli alti livelli trovati che hanno spinto la maggior parte dei pesci ben addentro la vegetazione e nel profondo dei meandri più ristretti.

Only problem was the high level of waters that pushed most of the fishes well inside the cover and in the deep end of the smallest creeks

E' stata pesca difficile con poche e sofferte catture per lo più a spinnerbait, centinaia di lanci precisi a filo ostacolo e ogni tanto l'attacco di una ferocia che ti coglie impreparato, a volte ti raddrizza addirittura l'amo, ma a volte ci restano, anche se dopo quasi ogni pesce l'artificiale è da buttare...

Hard fishing with few and suffered catches, most of them on a spinnerbait; hundreds of sharp casts and pitches to the obstacles and sometimes we're surprised by a ferocious strike that can even straighten a hook, but on several occasion we're lucky to hook well the fish, even if after almost any catch the spinner it's ready to be thrown away.

The Tackle:

Gli altri pesci, dall'harauan o snakehead striato al "jungle perch", in realtà non un persico ma un ciprinide superaggressivo e dal combattimento feroce...

Among other species the harauan, striped snakehead, and the jungle perch, not really a perch but a fish of the carp family, very aggressive and strong fighter...

E dopo tanti sforzi finalmente un bel pesce topwater, su un buzzbait della Shell Shaping Lures, mangiata detonante degna di un Gt, che dovrebbe essere la norma in condizioni più ideali...

After a lot of efforts finally a nice fish on topwater with a Shell Shaping Lures buzzer; a vicious strike like a GT one, that should be the norm in more ideal conditions...

Diciamo che per questa volta hanno vinto loro, nel senso che è mancato il pesce grande, anche se l'esperienza è stata memorabile.... tornerò sicuramente in questa parte di mondo alla caccia di questo fantastico predatore, Malesia, Thailandia, India, chissà ... intanto stiamo pensando di tornare a settembre in un'altra location malesiana... a chi interessasse non resta che mandarmi una mail :D

This time they won the battle, in the meaning that I didn't succeed in catching a truly big one, but the experience had been memorable... I'll go there again in that fashinating part of the world for sure, to hunt for this fantastic predator, Malaysia, Thailand, India, who know.... we're now thinking about going to another malaysian destination in september... if anybody is interested just send me an email :D
