ANDAMAN, SEA OF GIANTS ....

Un titolo un po' evocativo per il report del nostro viaggio di Maggio scorso; il periodo lo abbiamo scelto con cura, appena prima dell'arrivo del monsone e nel momento d'oro del passo dei tonni yellowfin, e la scelta ci ha dato ragione su tutti i fronti.

Il primo giorno e parte del terzo li abbiamo dedicati ai tonni, run and gun veloce seguendo i delfini, sotto di loro grossi branchi di yellowfin in caccia mischiati a qualche skipjack... è apparso anche il marlin che pinneggiava a galla in tranquillità, ma non ha degnato di uno sguardo il mio stick.
La taglia non era eccessiva, pesci dai 10 ai 25 kg, ma in quantità pressochè illimitata, onestamente ho perso il conto sopra quota venti per me, mentre i ragazzi si sono arresi prima... diciamo che era la speranza del big, che non è arrivato, a muovermi, dopo un certo punto, in zona c'erano pesci da 70 kg; ho pure slamato un lampugone di grossa taglia su un Dorado da 80 grammi, di quelli che vengono in modo spettacolare nelle foto, ahimè... peccato :)

An emotional title for the report of last May trip; we chosed the period just before monsoon arriving and in the peack of yft migration, and homeworks scored big under every aspects.

First and part of third day were dedicated to tuna chasing, a fast run and gun game following the dolphins; under them big pods of yellowfins and skipjacks ... I also had the cahnce to cast to a surface finning marlin, but he didn't like my stick.
Size was not big, mostly fishes between 10 and 25 kilos, but in unlimited quantity, honestly I lost count over 20, while other guys stopped way before... what kept me moving was the research of the big one that unfortunately didn't arrive, 70 kilos fishes were present in the zone; I also pulled the hook on a big mahi that attacked an 80 grams Alle's Lures Dorado cast near a  floating wood branch, could have made some spectacular pictures... too bad hehe :)

 

Come esche praticamente di tutto nelle giuste taglie, anche se gli stick affondanti hanno mietuto più vittime per la possibilità di lanciarli più lontano.... bastava che cadessero in acqua spesso, e il pesce ti strappava la canna di mano; spettacolari anche gli attacchi sui poppers.

As lures, almost everything worked in the right size with a preference for sinking stickbaits, due to the possibility to cast them farther... they were usually violently attacked in the moment they hitted the water or in the short moment when retrieving the slack line due to the wind... strong bites that almost pulled rod from hands; also the strikes on poppers were amazing.

 

 

Ma il nostro target principale erano i grossi carangidi per cui quest'area è famosa, un po' viziati dalla elevata temperatura dell'acqua di fine stagione, ma che ci hanno fatto visita in taglie veramente interessanti.
Per muoverli sono serviti grossi artificiali, poppers dai 130 ai 170 grammi lavorati piano, stickbait dai 160 ai 200 grammi lavorati piano anche loro e anche un pencil come il bichito da 130 grammi col quale Giovanni ha ottenuto alcune stupende catture. In poche occasioni nelle baie riparate hanno funzionato anche artificiali più umani.

Our main target were big GTs that make this place wellknown, they were a little lazy due to the high water tempearature of end of the season, but we were rewarded by several outstanding catches.
To move them we used big lures, poppers between 130 and 170 grams moved slowly, stickbaits in the 160-220 grams range retrieved in very lazy way and also a pencil like Bichito 130 grams in the calmest bays gave some spectacular fishes to my friend Giovanni. In few occasions in calm waters also some normal size lures worked well.

Anche a jigging ci si diverte come scimmie, specialmente con attrezzi leggeri anche PE3 ...

Also jigging is rewarding with a lot of fishes on PE3-4 class but also on bigger tackle..

Qualche mostriciattolo anche a vertical.... Il big GT del capitano sul PE3 ( devo smettere di fare provare le mie canne hahaha ) ... e un caro silver tip di taglia media..

A proposito di squali... qui si è fatto vivo il tigre, buchi dei denti da 4 cm... indovinate la taglia!

E quando fa caldo caldo la soluzione è una sola....

Potrei andare avanti con altre catture ma diciamo che credo che basti, l'esperienza è stata fantastica e le Andamane non hanno deluso, anzi, un paradiso per la pesca! L'anno prossimo abbiamo programmato una battuta estrema, c'è un banco a 50 miglia che risale fino in superficie quasi da oltre 2000 metri di fondo.... ma questa sarà un'altra avventura, si cercano jiggatori folli e popperatori feroci :D :D

I could go on with a lot more catches but I think it's enough, the experience has been fantastic and Andamans were up to their fame, a fishing paradise! For next year we're planning an extreme adventure, there's a bank 50 miles offshore that raises almost to the top from a bottom of 2000 meters... but that will be another story, we're looking for crazy jiggers and wild poppers :D :D

IL FUTURO DI PLASTICA ?

C'erano una volta le belle e care esche in legno fatte a mano... e ci sono ancora, ma sempre più spesso appaiono sul mercato nuovi artificiali di produzione di massa pensati per le pesche gravose e realizzati in plastica. Certo non hanno il fascino dell'artigianato, ma la loro qualità è andata aumentando fino ad offrirci degli ottimi oggetti dalle prestazioni veramente notevoli
I tempi delle esche "cheap" in schiuma con la vernice che saltava a guardarla sono lontani e, avendo avuto il piacere di fare un po' di shopping compulsivo ne ho potute provare diverse in pesca.

Once upon a time there were the old fashionable wooden lures.... and they still are there :D But  in recet times are appearing more and more mass producted plastic lures thinked for heavy fishing.
They might not have the appeal of custom ones but their quality has improved until the production of very nice objects with great  effectiveness.

Shimano, IMA, Duo, Tackle House, tra quelle che mi piacciono ma non solo loro, presentano in catalogo dei lures decisamente efficaci e che danno la possibilità di dedicarsi alle pesche pesanti senza svenarsi... al prezzo di un GT gamma possiamo prendere 4 Orca 220 ad esempio, e se proprio il mostro pinnuto ci strapperà la lenza non piangeremo così a lungo ma potremo montare a cuor leggero il prossimo artificiale...

Shimano, IMA, Duo, Tackle House all offer lures that I like a lot, but they're not the only ones. Price is often the good new, we could buy 4 orcas 220 for example at the price of a single Gt gamma, and if the line ever break we'll not cry that badly but proceed to tie next lure on the end of the line...

Ma non solo loro, tutte esche molto robuste con armatura passante che resistono ad un buon numero di attacchi se..... non incontrano un grosso barracuda o una cubera....

Il problema sono solo i buchi, una volta aperti si riempiono d'acqua e non lavorano più, contrariamente al legno che, se trattato a dovere in fase di costruzione, continua a galleggiare e  lavorare..

All the above lures are very though compared to old plastic generation, with through wire, and they withstand a good number of attacks... at least if we don'ìt encounter a big barracuda or a mean cubera snapper. Problem is just about theet holes, once pounched the lure fills with water and doesn't work anymore; the opposite of wood that continues to float and work if treated as should during the construction.

 

Aspettiamoci per il futuro un aumento di questo tipo di artificiali, perfetti per l'esordio tropicale ma anche validi strumenti nelle mani di chiunque, "esperti" compresi... anche se il fascino di un oggetto "custom" in legno come questo Shell Shaping Lure è comunque difficile da imitare :D

We must espect more models to fill the market in next future, the trend is plastic; they're perfect for the tropical beginner but also good weapons in experienced hands.... even if the charm of a custom wood like the Shell Shaping below will be hard to reach....

  

SMALL WATER CATFISH

Ultimamente mi sono divertito a cercare siluri in piccoli canali con discreta corrente e parecchia vegetazione acquatica; pesci non giganti mediamente tra i 10 e i 30 chili anche se le grosse sorprese possono essere dietro l'angolo specialmente a metà primavera quando i grossi pesci risalgono dal corso principale per la riproduzione.

These past months I enjoyed looking for wels catfishes in some small streams with good current and a lot of weed; the average fish is between 10 and 30 kilos, but big surprises can happen, especially in the middle of the Spring when big specimens come from the main waters to spawn.

Ovviamente non è posto per pesci da 100 kg per cui va benone un'attrezzatura media con ottima riserva di potenza, canna Yamaga Blanks Glazer 60H da casting, un validissimo Shimano Scorpion 1501XT robusto e affidabile nonostante la taglia e il costo ridotti e che mi ha fatto divertire anche con gli snakehead, trecciato bello grezzo da 60 libbre per fare fronte all'eventuale abrasione.

Of course we will not find 100 kilos fishes, so the right choice is a medium class outfit with a lot of backbone, the rod I choosed is the Yamaga Blanks Glazer 60H in baicasting model, the reel a affordable and strong Shimano Scorpion 1501XT that accompanied me also in snakehead fishing, and a good 60 lbs braid to withstand to the abrasion of environment.

 

Non è facile fare nuotare i crankbait tra i filoni di alghe mossi dalla corrente e sotto i quali si appostano i baffoni, per cui la scelta migliore come artificiale finora sono risultati i jigs da bass in taglie leggermente sovradimensionate per la profondità che varia dai 50 cm ai due metri; pesi quindi da 1/2 a 1 oncia, arricchiti con trailer molto voluminosi come lo Swing Impact Fat di keitech da 5.8" o la Yamamoto Kreature da 4". Per i colori non ho visto particolari preferenze anche se ho sempre cercato di dare un po' di contrasto con le acque velate, quindi mi sono trovato bene con bianco, giallo, nero e loro combinazioni.
Ho anche ottenuto ottimi risultati impiegando una frog bait ( la Molix Frog con gambine in silicone ) in modo insolito, ovvero dietro una testina piombata senza amo che mi sono fuso personalmente e ho arricchito con uno skirt colorato... i siluri hanno gradito molto questo strano jig, tanto da ingoiarlo profondamente in diverse occasioni... da approfondire

This is not the place to swim a crankbait, too many weed mats that swing in the current, and the cats  hide just under, so the lure that has worked better for me has been the weedless bass jig in a size slightly heavier than the dept of 50 cm to 2 meters could suggest; the trick is to bump it agressively along the bottom and in many cases to penetrate the vegetation; chosen weights ranged between 1/2 oz and a full ounce, paired with big voluminous trailer like 5.8" Keitech Swing Impact Fat or 4" Yamamoto Kreature. About colors I haven't seen special preferences but I always tried to accentuate the contrast with the slightly murky water, so white, yellow, black and their combination have worked well for me.
I've also had very good results pairing a soft frog ( Molix Frog ) joined behind a custom made hookless jighead to form a very particular jig; cats loved this combo so much that they often swallowed it deep.... worth more experiments.

 

 

Tutto sommato un bel passatempo e una pesca divertente a pochi passi da casa

It's a nice way to spend a couple hours near home, with lot of catches on some days.
