TROUT RODS, QUELLO CHE HO USATO E PROVATO

E' vero che di solito posto pesci esotici e tropicali, ma, vivendo vicino a Verona, sono cresciuto fin da piccolo con l'amore per lo spinning alla trota, specialmente nel "mio" caro Adige, ma amo anche frequentare altre acque libere spesso in compagnia di amici conoscitori dei luoghi.

Negli ultimi tre o quattro anni, dato che il mio lavoro mi ha portato a importare brand di alta qualità Giapponese, ho dedicato parte delle mie uscite in acque da salmonidi alla prova degli attrezzi offerti in particolare da Yamaga Blanks nelle serie Blue Current e Lupus, catturando abbastanza pesci, anche se non sempre nativi, da ottenere delle impressioni approfondite.

Se la Blue Current nasce per un uso marino, ben si adatta alla pesca in freshwater grazie all'estrema leggerezza e sensibilità; pescando generalmente in acque di una certa dimensione, dal torrente di fondovalle al lago appenninico al fiume vero e proprio, sono ovviamente i modelli più potenti che hanno attirato la mia attenzione, con un casting range fino a 13 e 15 grammi, nella fattispecie BC 77 TZ Nano "Stream Special" e BC 72 TZ Nano "Jig Special", entrambe anellate torzite e dalla spiccata reattività. Ho apprezzato la loro ecletticità, e soprattutto la capacità di controllo dell'artificiale anche in distanza e al di là di correnti sostenute, oltre alla famosa riserva di potenza nascosta tipica del brand nel caso di incontri di buona taglia in acque veloci. 

 

Serie invece più specifica e al top di gamma è la Lupus, nelle versioni "main stream" da 7 piedi e 7 pollici per 24 grammi, adatta a fiumi importanti e nella versione "mountain stream" da 7 piedi e 1 pollice per 14 grammi.

Esistono modelli superiori e inferiori, consultabili qui, per potenze e lunghezze, dai 5'1" agli 8'7", che coprono tutte le esigenze dal microtorrente infrascato al fiume della Patagonia. I materiali e la fattura sono veramente eccelsi, anelli torzite, fusti leggerissimi, portamulinelli in radica con ring dorati e sughero di prima qualità. Ovvio che il prezzo ne risente collocando queste canne in una fascia decisamente di lusso.

La vetta risulta più morbida delle Blue Current, pur conservando ottimo controllo e sensibilità ciò ci permette un numero di slamate e pesci persi particolarmente basso specie usando ami singoli barbless che ho adottato quasi esclusivamente durante l'ultimo anno; con la 77 nessun problema a ferrare e combattere pesci di taglia interessante, fino a 70 cm in acque correnti, ferrandoli talvolta con ondulanti pesanti a profondità di anche 4 metri d'acqua corrente... sinceramente me ne sono innamorato e mi seguirà anche in Lapponia questa estate alla ricerca delle Brown nordiche.

Anche la Lupus 71 si è rivelata un gioiellino, capace di ferrare senza paura a 50 metri in lago di montagna e combattere i notevoli pesci presenti, come pure di trovarsi a suo agio nel torrente a lanciare piccoli rotanti del numero 2

  

Diciamo che manca ancora la marmoratona o la seatrout di risalita per fare un test approfondito al 100 percento, ma qualche discreto pescetto me lo hanno fatto proprio godere.

PAPUAN BASS: SEARCHING FOR MY DREAM FISH

Laggiù nella terra dei cannibali, in fiumi remoti nella jungla, nuota un pesce che per me costituisce un feticcio da almeno 30 anni, fin dalla prima volta di cui ne sentii parlare, ovvero il Papuan Black Bass, o Lujanus goldiei per la scienza.
Nulla ha in realtà a che fare col nostro di Black Bass, è piuttosto uno snapper oversize, praticamente una cubera verde che ha eletto a dimora le acque dolci infestate di ostacoli di quella parte di mondo, ritenuto da molti uno dei pesci più distruttivi in rapporto alla taglia nei confronti delle nostre attrezzature.
Le dimensioni importanti, record superiori ai 20 kg e taglia potenziale superiore ai 30, la sua forza bruta, e la tendenza a adorare gli alberi sommersi, portano a usare trecciati da minimo 50 libbre ma anche 100 e più, e ciò nonostante, le percentuali di pesci portati in barca restano relativamente basse specie per gli esemplari significativi; ancorette SW aperte, fili spezzati, canne rotte e mulini sgranati sono infatti all'ordine del giorno.

Down there in cannibals land, in remote jungle rivers, swims a fish that has been a dream for me for the last 30 years, since I first read about it on te magazines; it is the Papuan Black Bass, Lutjanus goldiei for byologists.
Despite the name it has nothing to share with our common Largemouth Black Bass, being rather a oversized snapper, a kind of green Cubera that elected as home the freshwaters in that part of the world and it is considered by many one of the most destructive fishes for our tackle in relation to its size.
It can grow very big, with records well over 20 kilos and a potential size of more than 30; its brute strenght and the attitude to find a shelter in sunken trees oblige to the choice of minimum 50 lbs line, better 100 or even more, and even with such strong braids the percentage of fishes brought to the boat can be dramatically low, especially for the big ones: open SW hooks, snapped braids, broken rods and stripped reels can happen often.

Al panorama possiamo anche aggiungere una buona compagnia di animaletti interessanti, dai barramundi extra large, davvero extra large, ai queensland grouper o estuary cod, a talvolta qualche esemplare di GT che ha il vizio di risalire gli estuari anche per tratti importanti.
Insomma il mio incubo preferito!
Quest'anno a settembre finalmente abbiamo prenotato con Sportfishing PNG per il Kerema River, nella provincia del Golfo a ovest di port Moresby, sistemazione in lodge, belle barche attrezzate e non piroghe, e acque che hanno dato il corrente record IGFA di poco più di 47 libbre.

We can add to the party a good company of interesting critters, from XL barramundi, truly XL ones, Queensland Groupers aka Estuary Cod, and sometimes some big GTs that gets lost upriver from the estuary. Practically my favourite nightmare!
This year in september we have finally reserved our adventure with Sportfishing PNG on the Kerema River, Gulf province, west of Port Moresby; lodge accomodation, nice and well equipped boats instead of canoes like in some other places, and waters that have given the current Igfa record of slightly more than 47 lbs.

Attrezzatura per me sarà un Ripple Fisher custom ancora da definire e una Deps Huge Custom h3n-62f, mulinelli Daiwa Ryoga Shrapnel e probabilmente Shimano Tranx 401, come trecciato un tranquillo PE8 per cominciare, e via a pitchare crank oversize tra mangrovie, rami e canneti.

My choosen tackle will be a custom Ripple Fisher yet to define and a Deps Huge Custom h3n-62f, Daiwa Ryoga Shrapnel and possibly Shimano Tranx 401 as reels and PE8 braid to begin piching big cranks among mangroves, reeds and logs.

ELOPS GAME ... IL LIGHT ESOTICO

"Elops" è un genere che racchiude alcune specie di pesci tutte estremamente simili e quasi impossibili da distinguere se non sei un ittiologo... quello che interessa a noi è che sono distribuite nelle acque tropicali di quasi tutto il mondo, che sono parenti stretti del tarpon, girano in branchi, attaccano senza remore i piccoli lures e saltano come il loro parente maggiore.

"Elops" is a fish genus that collects several species all very similar one to another, so much that it is almost impossible to distinguish among them if you're not a biologist... what is of much interest for us is that they populate tropical waters in almost all the world, they are close tarpon relatives, swim in big schools, bite all kind of small lures and jump like their big cousin.

Sono più conosciuti come Ladyfish, io li ho incontrati a Cuba, in Sri Lanka anche in acque salmastre di risalita ma soprattutto a Kerè in Guinea Bissau... praticamente di fronte alla spiaggia davanti ai bungalow c'è un tappeto di questi pesci sempre disposti a farci divertire nelle pause tra le pescate più serie.

They are commonly known as "ladyfish", I found them in Cuba, in Sri Lanka brakish waters, but most of all at kerè in Guinea Bissau... in front of the beach right out of the bungalow there is practically a carpet of these small predators, always ready to give us some fun in the breaks and relax moments after some more serious fishing session.

Tecnicamente ci si può sbizzarrire, dai piccoli metal a lipless minnow e hardbait in generale, ma il massimo del divertimento è con piccole jighead e gomme di provenienza Ajing, ovvero tutte quelle piccole eschine che hanno recentemente invaso il nostro mercato, magari con un po' di contaminazione di grubbetti da acque interne.

Lures choice is very wide, from small metal casting jigs to mini stickbaits and minnow plugs, but most fun is using small jighead and soft plastics the kind that are usually sold for ajing game, with maybe some tiny grubs from freshwater as contamination.

Il primo anno che ho praticato questa pesca usai una Yamaga Blanks Blue Current 78, una canna di potenza 12 grammi circa, ma questa volta sono sceso parecchio come ormeggi, affidandomi alle attuali Blue Current 74II con casting weight di 8 gr e Blue Current 72TZ appena più leggera con 7 gr di max. Entrambi piccoli fioretti che rendono facilissima la gestione dei pesi leggerissimi di tali testine ma conservano una bellissima azione in combattimento per contrastare i mini-tarpon.

First time I tried the game , like 4 years ago, I used a Yamaga Blanks Blue Current 78, a sod labeled to 12 grams of casting weight, but this time I went down to actual Blue Current 74II with 8 grams maximum lure weight and Blue Current 72TZ with sharper action and 7 grams as max.

Both little whips make very easy to cast and control the micro lures, while keeping a fantastic action during the fight with the mini-tarpons

Lascio tutto il resto alle foto, compreso un occasionale snapper che ci ha fatto penare decisamente con un trecciato 0.6 libbre... una piccola cubera in pratica :D

Enough with words, I let pictures talk... last fish an occasional snapper that also liked the small softie and put up a cubera like fight on scaled down proportions :D

FIRST IMPRESSIONS: GALAHAD 73/4 LONG FALL JIG ROD BY YAMAGA BLANKS

Una canna che mi aveva sempre incuriosito sulla carta, ne ho ordinate un paio su richiesta di clienti dello shop e mi ha impressionato al punto che ne ho voluta provare una anch'io, pur non essendo dedito allo slow jig molto spesso.

It is a rod I've always been curious about looking at paper catalogue, I odrered some for my shop customers and I was impressed, so I decided to try one myself, even if I don't slow jig so often.

La prima cosa che stupisce in una canna per uso verticale è la lunghezza insolita, 7 piedi e 3 pollici, con assemblaggio offset per ridurne l'ingombro nel trasporto, sembrano tanti, ma in realtà in pesca sono risultati molto maneggevoli e contribuiscono non poco al controllo dell'artificiale in corrente; la sigla "long fall" infatti indica una presentazione in slow jigging con cadute particolarmente prolungate, che quindi necessitano di lunghezza superiore alle classiche 6 piedi.

First thing that comes to attention is the unusual lenght for a vertical rod, 7 feet and 3 inches, even with offset construction for an easier packing, seems plenty, but on the fishing ground it felt very easy to handle and that added lenght contributes a lot to control the lure in current: "long fall" label indicate a rod that is designed for a slow jigging presentation with very long drops between jerks and so needing a longer rod to master.

L'azione sull'esca è un po' più fast, proprio in virtù della leva posteriore aumentata, ma ciò apre anche ad altri scenari d'uso. In particolare l'ho trovata perfetta per manovrare jig heads con soft plastic, tipo i classici Black Minnow o Sandeel, ma anche Inchiku e Kabura nelle versioni "muscled up" che mi piace usare per i predatori seri, ma della tecnica ne abbiamo già parlato qui in passato.

Action on the lure is somewhat faster, as backbone part of blank is longer, but this construction open the use also to other kind of jigging. I found it perfect to move big jigheads with soft plastic, like usual Black Minnow or Sand Eels, but also beefed up Inchikus and Kaburas that I like to use for serious predatory fishes, for a remind to the technique and lures just check here  ( only in Italian at that time. sorry about that )

Le prove pratiche mi hanno fatto catturare alcune Otholite, parenti africani delle nostre ombrine, tra cui una bellissima "snake" da 11 kg... sono pesci potenti e dalla mangiata rabbiosa, e sia in ferrata che in combattimento nessun problema per la canna, anzi una curva molto piacevole, elevata sensibilità e una grande riserva di potenza per un attrezzo del genere.

On the fishing grounds I caught some good otholites, including a nice "snake" of 11 kilos that put up quite a fight in the fast drift .... those are powerful fishes with angry hit, but no problem for the rod both on strike and during the fight, but a very pleasant curve, high sensibility and a lot of backbone for a tool in this class.

L'impressione è che le capacità della canna vadano oltre i dati, almeno per quanto riguarda la potenza e gestione delle prede.... ce la porteremo magari anche in altre destinazioni come Laccadive e Colombia per avere un quadro più completo, ma l'idea è quella di un attrezzo polivalente capace di passare dallo slow alla gomma al vertical più tradizionale senza battere ciglio... vedremo come si troverà coi long jigs a ricciole o con il long jerk a doggies, ma le aspettative sono alte.

I had the impression that rod capabilities go well beyond the label datas, at least concerning power and fight of preys... I will bring it in other destinations, maybe Lakshadweep and Colombia, to have a more complete impression, but the idea is of a versatile tool that can pass from slow pitch to soft plastic to classic vertical jigging without problems... I'll see how it will deal with AJs with long jigs or doggies on fast jerking, but expectations are high.

Come note tecniche, bello il montaggio a spirale e ottima la lunghezza del manico anche per uno alto come me... ne parleremo ancora.

As a technical note, very nice the spiral guides and perfect long lenght of the handle also for people tall like me ... I feel we'll talk again about this rod.

QUICK VISIT TO THE CUSTOM LURES FAIR IN FERRARA

Like every year the guys at Project bait organize a boot at the Ferrara Fishing Fair to give space to some of the more talented lures builders in Italy.
It is a small show but with good public and growing importance.
Timing this year was a bit unlucky for me as I came back from Guinea Bissau fishing trip the exact day of beginning of the show, so I couldn't take part, anyway I made a quick visit the following days to meet friends and toappreciate their new creations...
Here, in random order, are some of the most noticeable ones by my fishing point of view...

First, the maxy mouse by my friend Mauro Borselli of X-Flies, a jointed floating rat imitator with interchangeable accessories ( lip, head weight, replacable tails and legs ) that can make it dive, pop or sink; it is made of hardened foam, covered with sintetic fur with obviously through wire, and even if thought for wels catfish and pikes I am sure it would work wonders for bass and maybe exotic predators like aimara or murray cod...

Remaining in freshwater, a selection of small swimbaits designed to fish for marbled trouts at night, pure wood, by Alessandro "spoonboy" Hoban:

Going toward the salt, Andrea Pedaci nice lures, selection of poppers, sticks and other models:

Enriko Piola's Project bait stickbait, big lure for tunas and gt, it completes a range of small stickbaits and poppers for all marine predators, resin made...

The "Nessie" by Macchia's Lead, by Giovanni de Francesco,... one of the best needlefish imitators around, resin made:

And last of the line, a dive in soft plastic with the spectacular goby imitator by Andrea Zovatto, it looks alive in water:

I surely missed other talented builders, but I was in hurry and concentrated on what caught my eye first... next year I will be there with more attention and time.
