I LOVE DARTERS

Un tipo di artificiale che ho sempre adorato, a partire dai datati ma sempre efficaci Yozuri Mag Darter e Ima Komomo e Sasuke, a tante altre esche meno diffuse e conosciute; penso di averci catturato l'impossibile nel corso degli anni, con però un preciso limite dato dalla costruzione senza armatura passante delle esche in plastica commerciali, con l'esclusione dei Komomo originali quando ancora prodotti in Giappone.
Altra "mancanza grave" per l'uso che ne faccio io è l'assenza di modelli di taglia seria adatti ai predatori di taglia maggiore.

It is a kind of lures that I've always loved, since introduction of the old but trusty Yozuri Mag Darter and Ima Komomo and Sasuke, not to mention a lot of lesser known ones; I've caught a bit of everything during the years, but with the limit given by the predominant lack of a strong through wire construction of commercial plastic lures, apart maybe original komomos when still built in Japan.
Other void left was concerning the size, as not big darters are available to pursue the bigger predators.

TESTING SOFT PLASTICS

Da tempo cercavo una soft bait da skippare sotto le mangrovie, compatta e massiccia ma con vibrazioni interessanti e capace di sostenere e nascondere degli ami wide gap di generose dimensioni e robustezza... parliamo di una pesca fatta con canna da 6 piedi o poco più, mulino di carattere e PE 2 o meglio 3 con terminale  minimo 50 libbre, attrezzatura adatta ad estrarre di prepotenza da radici e ostriche, o almeno a provarci, pesci ostici come snappers, snooks e affini.

I've been searching long time for the right soft bait to be skipped under mangrove branches, a compact lure, heavy enough and with interesting vibrations, able to be dressed with a serious and heavy wide gap hook ... I am talking a fishing action made with a 6 footer or little more of a rod, strong reel and PE2 or better PE3 to muscle out of their hiding place fishes like snappers, snooks and other stubborn critters.

ANDAMAN APRIL 2018

Ultimamente sono un po' in ritardo, ma i ricordi da Aprile sono sempre vivi, una delle più belle settimane di sempre per me alle isole Andaman, ospiti del mio buon amico Akshay, gestore dell'ottimo charter Andamanangler... infatti abbiamo già prenotato per il 2019.

Abbiamo battuto zone conosciute e esplorato spot nuovi, l'attività di superficie dei GT è stata ottima e a jigging abbiamo preso un po' di tutto anche se devo lamentare come al solito la perdita di qualche mostro, tra cui un signor doggy che è stato mangiato in qualcosa di mostruoso a metà di un combattimento impegnativo...

A topwater il popper ha fatto da padrone, con alcune catture a pencil e veramente pochi pesci a stick, cosa strana vista l'acqua calma che avrebbe fatto pensare l'opposto.

I am a bit late updating my blog in recent time, but the memories of our April trip to Andaman are still alive, it has been one of the best weeks ever for me in that destination, fishing with Andamanangler organization of my good friend Akshay, IMHO best choice available there.. and to be safe we've already reserved our week for next year.

We fished familiar spots and also explored new areas, surface activity for GT has been very good and also jigging was very rewarding, with the usual lost fights to deep sea monster.. I especially remember a definitely good specimen of dogtooth that was stolen in one single bite by something huge in the middle of a spirited fight...

On Topwater poppers ruled the scene, with little numbers left to stickbaits, a strange thing in the flat sea conditions we found, but who cares hehe.

COLOMBIA BAHIA SOLANO GENNAIO 2018

Un viaggio forse un po' precoce dato che quella che chiamano estate qui ancora non si vedeva e il cambio d'acqua non era avvenuto... abbiamo faticato un po' più del previsto ma i risultati non sono mancati.

A trip a bit too early in season maybe as local "summer" was late and the change of blue water hadn't happened yet.... fishing was not so fast and furious as we like but we got nice results anyway.

A LURE I LIKE : NEMESI 180 SS

Ok, non sono un fan dei long jerk, sono sottili, si muovono poco e sono fragili, questo in generale, in più odio i recuperi a sbacchettata compulsiva; li uso poco anche se a volte danno risultati interessanti, ma mi ci è voluto un poco a trovarne uno con cui avessi un certo feeling per portarlo in situazioni impegnative. Il nemesi 180 ci cade bene dentro, armatura passante, plastica robusta, paletta rinforzata e ancorette di qualità, tutti segni della mano di un pescatore dietro al progetto di un artificiale riuscito... e poi lancia molto bene anche su attrezzi pesanti e nuota modo convincente anche da solo, cosa che piace a me ed ai pesci.

I never been a special fan of long jerk minnow lures, they are thin, don't swim greatly and are fragile, at least in general, and I hate the retrieves done with compulsive jerking; I seldom use them, even if sometimes they are very effective, as it took me a lot of time to find a model in which I have some feeling to bring it in relatively extreme situations. nemesi 180 fills the void, through wire construction, hard plastic, reinforced lip and good quality treble hooks, all signs of a fisherman project hand behind it .... add to it that it casts very well even on heavy tackle and its swim is convincing even without special rod manipulations, a thing that appeal both to me and the fishes.

WIRE ASSIST HOOKS

Prossimo viaggetto pescherò profondo, almeno quella è l'intenzione, il che significa possibilità di big dogtooth e certezza di squali; del primo si dice che non taglia, ma in realtà mi è successo col pesce a vista e quindi senza errori di identificazione, e devo dire che su un pesce grosso a combattimento finito brucia, quello che è strano è che succeda a volte sì e a volte no, credo dipenda da eventuali denti scheggiati durante il combattimento; i secondi non sono molto amati in genere ma io li trovo dei gran combattenti e ho sempre piacere di confrontarmi con loro.
Ecco quindi la necessità, dal mio punto di vista, di avere assist a prova di taglio, per quanto a volte sembrino ridurre la quantità di abboccate, ma forse meglio pochi presi che tanti persi; del terminale in acciaio sopra il jig cercherò di fare a meno, dato che quello realmente riduce l'attrattiva dell'esca.. speriamo di essere fortunati e avere qualche buona allamata.

Next trip i will try jigging in very deep water looking for doggies, but that means also shark encounters;  many fishermen say that dogtooth doesn't cut assist and leader, but I saw it happen at boatside and I can grant it is realy disappointing to loose a big fish after a long fight almost won, I guess it depends on some broken tooth with cutting edges, maybe due to jig impact as I also had fishes with leader deep in the mouth and no problem for the nylon, but better safe than sorry; shark by the other side are not very wellcome by many, but I always love to fight some of them, especially if big one.
So I have the need of uncuttable assist, even if sometimes they seem to reduce the number of hits, but in some situations it is better few landed than many lost in my opinion.
I will try to avoit the wire leader ahead of the jig as that definitely reduce strike numbers ... and hope.

PEACOCKS OF MATAVEN

Dopo aver pescato in lungo e in largo per il pianeta non poteva mancare un'avventura a peacock bass, teatro di questo nostro viaggio è stato il rio Mataven, affluente dell'Orinoco nella selva Colombiana.
Il viaggio è stato lunghetto, Bologna-Madrid-Bogotà, notte nella capitale, volo interno su Puerto Inirida, serata in un piccolo ma ottimo resort e l'indomani alcune ore di navigazione, prima sul grande fiume con barca rapida e poi sul nostro rio con le barche dei locali, indios di etnia Piaroa che detengono tutti i diritti di pesca del Mataven e lo amministrano con grande oculatezza e attenzione per la salvaguardia di un'importantissima risorsa turistica: pochi gruppi sono permessi ogni anno, il C&R è totale e vige l'obbligo di ami singoli per tutelare al massimo il pesce.
Va da se che il popolamento di queste acque è pauroso, sia come taglie che come quantità, pesci da 20 libbre sono comuni e catturati praticamente tutti i giorni; tre specie di "Chicla"sono presenti, il grande temensis, l'onnipresente butterfly e il caratteristico orinocensis; se il primo è facilmente distinguibile, confesso di avere fatto una certa confusione tra le altre due specie, piuttosto simili nella loro variabilità.
La location dove alloggiamo è spettacolare, un campo tendato confortevolissimo su una spiaggia incantevole, nulla è lasciato al caso, docce, bagno, tende comuni per cenare, elettricità che non manca mai e una crew assolutamente attenta e preparata... la birra fesca non è mai un problema.

Having fished well around the world, I couldnìt miss the chance to target Peacock Bass, and this time we went on the Mataven river, an Orinoco tributary in teh Colombian jungle.
The trip has been long, bologna-madrid-Bogotà, a night in the capital and then fly again to Puerto Inirida, another night in a very nice resort and the day after some hours of navigation, first on a fast boat on the big river and then on the skiff of the local guides, belonging to the loca tribe of Piaroa Indios who own the fishing rights on the Mataven and administer it all with great respect to a great touristic resource: few groups of fishermen are allowed every year, total C&R is the policy and single hooks instead of trebles are mandatory to avoid damaging the fishes.
That said, the fish population in this water is astonishing, both in numbers and sizes, 20 pounder are common and caught basically every day: there are three "Chicla" species, the big temensis, the everpresent butterfly and the carachteristic orinocensis; if the first specie is easily to recognize, I made a bit of confusion on the two lesser species as they look quite similar to my untrained eyes.
Lodgement location is a spectacular tent camp on a sandy beach, everything is well projected and kept, with showers, bathroom, common spaces to dine and electricity in every monet to aliment, fans, fridges and so on.. cold beer is never a problem.

A CUSTOMER'S APPEAL TO MR. SHIMANO

Dear Mr. Shimano,

I have been a faithful customer for at least the last 20 years, owned dozens os Stradic, Symetre, Curado, Scorpion, Rarenium, Twin Power, Calcutta, Antares, Bantam, Ocea Jigger and a half pallet of various Stella, from the fisrt silver F serie, through FA, FB and lately SW-B models.

I have been always satisfied, I use my reels, abuse them often as a hardcore fisherman worldwide... they always performed great and even beyond their supposed task sometimes... no complaints.

Until I met this 14000 SW-B... I brought it to 2 exotic popping trips, hoping to deal in the PE8 class instead of always using the trusted 10000FA.
Mechanically it performed pretty well, no issues, great casting and a lighter weight, compared to the old blue brother, that helps me fishing longer and more efficently... but, there is a but...

I hated the feeling while retrieving a stickbait, the annoying thump-thump-thump of line slapping against the first guide, due, by what I read on socials ( to be confirmed ), to the angle of reel foot now parallel to the rod while in past models angled toward it.
I read it is best suited to K style rings with higher feet, but noway I will renounce to use my beloved custom Ripples and Fisherman rods. Maybe my fault as I refuse to evolve by this point of view :D
I know it is not a "serious" problem, just a feeling issue, but, as fishing is also a pleasure, a relax moment, I would like to have my expensive toys to perform smoothly and I really hope you will keep this in consideration with future models...
