CHOOSING TACKLE FOR MY TRAIRAO TRIP

Finalmente sta arrivando il momento del viaggio di settembre in Mato Grosso, alla ricerca del Trairao, meglio noto come wolffish, Hoplias sp. ( malabaricus ) per la scienza.
Sono passati diversi anni dalla mia prima esperienza con l'Aimara, ( un altra sepcie del genere Hoplias ), parente molto stretto che vive nelle acque della Guyana Francese, il report è visibile Qui, e ricordo ancora quell'avventura come una delle lie preferite in acqua dolce; i pesci erano cattivi, l'ambienre selvaggio e difficile, un piccolo fiume dalle acque veloci che scorre nella jungla tra rocce giganti, rapide e alberi sommersi, un incubo di covers abitate da mostri con le pinne.
Questa volta affronteremo uno scenario differente, acque molto limpide di fiume e lagune, pieni di vegetazione acquatica e piante, quindi spero di poter andare via un po' più leggero come attrezzatura, piuttosto del PE5 che ho usato in Guyana e che pure a volte non è stato abbastanza... lo sapremo prestonuove sfide in nuovi posti sono quello che tengono vivo il mio interesse.

Come attrezzatura porterò di base tre canne, Yamaga Blanks Xtremo 65 da baitcasting abbinata a uno Shimano Curado 301, la Glazer 60X sempre Yamaga da casting con PE 2-3 su Shimano Scorpion 1501 e poi la stessa canna in versione spinning con il Twinpower 5000XD, magari un paio in più di scorta per delle situazioni inaspettate.

Fili, trecciati grezzi tra le 30 e le 65 libbre, dando priorità alla resistenza all'abrasione piuttosto che alle performance di lancio .. terminali in titanio portando con me dalle 40 alle 100 libbre così potrò preparare in loco quello che mi serve.

Time is closing, I am badly looking forward for September trip in Mato Grosso to hunt for big Trairao, aka Wolf Fish, Hoplias sp. ( malabaricus ? ) for science...
Several years have passed since my quest for Aimara ( another Hoplias ), very close relative living in French Guyana waters, you can see report HERE , and I still remember that adventure as one of my best freshwater one; the fishes were mean, the environment wild and difficult, a small fast river flowing in the jungle among giant rocks and sunken trees, a nightmare of covers inhabited by finned monsters.
What we'll infront now will be a different scenario, very clean rivers and lagoons filled with weeds and greenery, so I hope I can get away with somewhat lighter tackle than the PE5 I used in Guyana when I suffered also a couple bad bustoffs.... time will tell, new challenges and new places are what keep up my interest to the max.

Speaking about tackle I will bring basically three rods, a baitcasting PE4-5 outfit like Yamaga Blanks Xtremo 65 paired with Shimano Curado 301, a PE 2-3 rod again baitcasting like Yamaga Blanks Glazer 60X paired with Shimano Scorpion 1501, and same model rod in spinning version with a TwinPower 5000XD ... these three will be my basic arsenal with maybe a couple spares in case of unexpected situations.

Lines, badass braids, in 30 to 65 lbs, giving priority to abrasion resistance rather than casting performances.... leader will be titanium and I will bring with me 40 to 100 lbs wire in order to prepare on place what will better fit the needs.


Tempo di parlare di artificiali, la parte più divertente nella preparazione di ogni viaggio .... sceglierò sulla base sia della passata esperienza che delle informazioni reperibili sul web che, ovviamente. dei suggerimenti dell'operatore locale.
Criterio di scelta sarà la robustezza, dato che dovranno resistere a delle mascelle dalla forza esagerata e dai denti da incubo e a dei combattimenti decisamente violenti; l'armatura passante sarà un plus anche se non tutti gli artificiali la posseggono; gli ami spesso necessitano di essere cambiati con hardware di livello marino.

TOPWATERS

i primi a essere scelti, gli attacchi violenti a galla sono la principale attrazione della pesca al trairao, quindi avrò sicuramente bisogno di walk the dog stickbait e di uno dei favoriti locali, il Whopper Plopper di River2Sea.
Tra i wtd mi porterò i miei Alle's Lures Habano in diverse taglie visto che hanno lavorato molto bene in passato e resistono a qualunque pesce, Evergreen Amazon, Imakatsu Trairao ( coincidenza ? ) e OSP Bowstick, tutta roba già provata e testata con pesci importanti. Mi porto pure un crawler, il Jackall Pompadour da sperimentare.

So we are to the lure selection chapter... the funniest part of every trip... I will make choice as following, considering both my past experience, the web infos and suggestions by local operator.
All lures need to be strong to withstand crashing jaws and furious fights, through wire is a plus but cannot be obtained for all lures, hooks need often to be changed to saltwater grade ones.

TOPWATERS

these are the first to be chosen, the vicious surface attack is what trairao is famous for so I absolutely need walk the dog stickbaits and one of the local favorites, the River2Sea Whopper Plopper.
In the WTD array i will bring my own Habanos in various size as they performed really well in past trip, Evergreen Amazon, Imakatsu Trairao ( coincidence ? ) and OSP Bowstick. Also a crawler as the Jackall Pompadour could be interesting to have.

In Guyana Francese la regola era più è grossa l'esca e più è grosso il pesce, non sono sicuro sia così anche in Brasile ma meglio essere preparati.

In French Guyana the rule was the bigger the lure the bigger the fish, not sure it will work in the same way in Mato Grosso but I will be prepared to do the testing.

Poi i Wake Baits ... così catturanti sul rio Sinnamary, Lucky Craft Search Bull e Evergreen Ratatat ... basta lanciarli e recuperarli, fanno tutto da soli nuotando nel film superficiale.

Then the  Wake Baits ... so catchy in Sinnamary river, the Lucky Craft Search Bull and the Evergreen Ratatat ... just cast and retrieve they do all the work staying still in the surface film.

Pesci grossi vogliono spesso artificiali grandi, specialmente considerando che queste creature si sono evolute per predare anche grossi animali terrestri caduti o che nuotano nel fiume .. roditori, iguane, serpenti sono tutti sul loro menù e si racconta che bradipi, scimmie e persino cani vengono attaccati in certe occasioni dato che il nostro pescetto può potenzialmente passare i 40 kg ... megli essere prudenti a lavarsi le mani ...
Quindi qualche bella swimbait si infila di sicuro nella mia cassetta.

Big fishes want big lures, and especially considering these creatures have evolved to prey on very large terrestrial animals fallen or swimming in the river... rats, iguanas, snakes are on their menu and monkey , sloths and even dogs have been reported ti be attacked as mr Trairao could reach and possibly past the 40 kilos size... better be careful in washing our hands ...
So big swimbaits can have their place in my tackle box...

Gli spinnerbait sono indispensabili per quando i pesci non sono attivi a galla, possono scendere tra alghe e tronchi senza incagliarsi di continuo ... l'unico problema è trovarne di abbastanza robusti ... i modelli da bass non vanno, gli ami si aprono e il frame si rompe o raddrizza ... anche sui modelli più strong da lucci o musky la struttura va raddrizzata dopo ogni cattura, sempre che resista ... In Guyana ho usato qualche spinner che mi ero costruito con grossi ami da mare e acciaio 1.6, tenevano bene il pesce ma necessitavano comunque di essere raddrizzati spesso.

Spinnerbait are a must have lure, for when the fishes are not active on topwater, they can go down there in the weed and wood to search for them... only problem is finding strong enough model... bass models won't do, hooks get easily straightened and wire bent... even on big pike or musky models the wire is gonna bend and will need adjustements after every catch... in Guyana I used custom ones with big saltwater hook and 1.6 wire... they held the fish but also needed to be fixed often.

Ovviamente qualche minnow non può mancare, robusti! Io ho i miei favoriti ma ce ne sono diversi che si adattano.

And some minnow plugs of course, strong ones, I have my favourites but many can fill the slot.

Finora le basi, poi aggiungo qualcosa di strano e inusuale, qualche rana di gomma per i punti di vegetazione fitta... non dureranno a lungo con quei denti, come a snakehead daltronde, dove ho imparato a dare fiducia alla Spro King Daddy Bronzeye, 1 oncia a un bel po' più grande delle solite imitazioni da bass.

Those will be the basics, then I will add some unusual lures, some frogs for example, as vegetation is heavy.. they will not last long in those mouths, same as with snakehead fishing, were I learnt to rely on Spro King Daddy Bronzeye, 1 0z size and visibly bigger than usual bass models

Prendendo lo spunto dello Snakehead, perchè non provare un paio di artificiali creati per loro? ovviamente in taglia magnum .. un buzz, una jumpfrog e una popfrog che ho fatto io...

While we're talking snakehead, why not to consider a couple of lures created for the Channa, of course in big size.. a buzz, a jumpfrog and a popfrog I made...

Mi porto pure un paio di jerk, tendono a funzionare ovunque, quindi perchè lasciarli a casa ...

I will bring also a couple jerkbait, they tend to work everywhere so why leave home without them...

E qualche crank, giusto in caso, da shallow a deep...

And maybe some cranks just in case, from shallow to deep....

Penso di avere abbastanza peso con me e di avere coperto tutte le situazioni possibili.
Qualche gomma e magari un paio di jigs antialga, del tipo che uso per siluri, e sono a posto.
Mi farò anche qualche esca custom, qualche esperimento, è parte del mio personale divertimento visto che ho qualche idea da convertire in legno... ne parliamo quando sarò soddisfatto però ..
Non prendete questa lista come "i migliori in giro" per il trairao, sono solo le mie scelte personali... ma mi aspetto che mi procurino una certa azione.
Lo vedremo presto, Brasile arrivo!!!

I think I have enough weight in my lurebox and I am hopefully covered for any situation.
Some softies and maybe a couple of weedless jigs the kind I use for wels catfish and I am happy.
I will also make some custom lures right for this trip, this is part of my personal fun as I have some ideas to convert in wood... but not the moment to talk about them until I am satisfied.
Don't take this as the suggestion of the best lures around for Hoplias game, thise are just my personal choices... but I expect them to give me some good action.
We'll see it in less than two months.... Brazil I am coming!!

QUICK REVIEW : YAMAGA BLANKS BALLISTICK 11MH TZ Nano

Come già in passato, ogni tanto ci capita per le mani qualche canna "insolita" per i parametri dello spinning italiano e mediterraneo, insolita per le abitudini del mercato, perché in realtà si adatta perfettamente a situazioni riscontrabili anche da noi.

Sometimes it happens we have some special rod for a special customer order, a rod "unusual" by italian market standards, but in reality it often suits very well mediterranean fishing ground and more.

E' la volta di una canna da "hira suzuki", ovvero creata per pescare in scogliera e acque mosse pesci energetici e spesso di grossa taglia come le blackfin suzuki, sorella dopata della conosciuta spigola giapponese. Parliamo di pesca impegnativa da scogli spesso alti e battuti da onde potenti, ove l'esigenza primaria è stare al sicuro dal frangente, riuscire a presentare esche di varie tipologie e combattere pesci in un ambiente ostile e in presenza di forte corrente, tutte cose perfettamente riscontrabili anche sulle nostre coste in condizioni di mareggiate e scadute importanti.

This time we checked a "hira" rod, created for shore fishing the blackfin suzuki, the bad sister of the common japanese seabass, a fish that dwells around rocky shores pounded by big waves and strong currents. The needs of this kind of fishing are safety from the waves, the presentation of a wide array of lures, and the demanding fights with strong fishes in a difficult environment.
All those things can be found also in the Med coasts, soon after a storm that typically move our local predators.

Per la prima richiesta, evidentemente una 11 piedi ( 336 cm ) ci garantisce quella distanza di sicurezza opportuna per evitare di essere investiti da onde inaspettate pur rimanendo in pesca in maniera perfetta; la lunghezza può apparire anche esagerata ma in realtà la leggerezza della canna, ottenuta grazie alle nuovissime nano alloy, con solo 228 grammi ci consente una maneggevolezza che precedentemente non era riscontrabile in attrezzi analoghi.

The lenght of 11 feet obviously grants our safety on the rocks, allowing an effective fishing action while keeping the right distance from the breakers; maybe lenght can seem exagerated, but in reality the very light weight of the rod of 228 grams, obtained with the new "Nano alloy" materials, allows a surprisingly easy handling, a things not found in older similar rods.

La presentazione dell'esca nelle nostre prove, e da come si può chiaramente vedere nel video ufficiale, è paragonabile a quella ottenibile con le classiche "corte" a cui siamo abituati; minnows anche piccoli a partire da 10 cm per arrivare a taglie importanti da 50 grammi, wtd, stickbaits, pencil, jigs e anche gomma sono tutti nel range di questa canna e perfettamente manovrabili anche in distanza e profondità... e quando parliamo di distanza intendiamo quella vera, dato che la lunga leva e la sottigliezza del fusto che offre poca resistenza all'aria ci permettono di ottenere lanci stupefacenti; un buon minnow viaggia a 60 metri, con un metal da 40 valichiamo i 100, ovviamente con mulinello e trecciato bilanciati.

We found very easy in our testng to work the lures, in a way comparable to the "short" rods we're used to play with; small minnows from 10 cm to 50 grams, wtd stickbaits, pencils, jigs and even soft plastics can all be used with the Hira and perfectly worked even in distance... and we're talking real distance, thanks to long leverage and thin profile of blank and rings we can easily make incredible casts; a good minnow flies to 60 meters while a 40 grams metal can easily shatter the 100 mt barrier, with the righ reel and braid combo. 

Le prede? Spigole a mare mosso, anche se la schiena potente e con gran riserva di potenza ambisce a ben altro... quindi palamite, alletterati, ricciole di media taglia, dentici, grossi serra e altro;  niente paura a tirare, il dentice lo teniamo lontano dallo scalino grazie alla leva fast al limite dello shore jigging. I pesci da qualche chilo nel video li volano di peso direttamente, tanta schiena davvero, ma dopotutto è la filosofia Yamaga che dice più o meno quanto segue: "non importa quanto leggero peschiate, il pesce da sogno può sempre arrivare e le nostre canne vi forniscono quella potenza nascosta di cui avete bisogno in quelle situazioni".

What fishes we can target with it? First, big seabass ih wavy conditions, but the strong backbone can withstand much more ... so atlantic bonitos, little tunny, small amberjacks, good size leerfishes, dentex, bluefishes and much more; no fear in the fight, a dentex is easily kept far from the edge of the dropoff. In the official video the average fishes of few kilos are easily lifted from the water in a single fast movement, there is for sure the hidden power for some amazing catches.

Con 500 grammi attaccati

Diciamo che avremo il tempo di provarla ampiamente in futuro perchè è il classico caso in cui "resta attaccata alle mani" :D

Come componentistica e estetica, niente fronzoli, un sobrio e bellissimo nero, reel seat con secondo anello per assicurare la chiusura sul mulinello, anelli ultra light in torzite stile "k" dal primo all'ultimo, doppio ponte alla base come si confà a una canna importante sulla quale potrebbe arrivare di tutto e diametri giusti che ci consentono terminali importanti; ovviamente il prezzo è importante per questa Rolls Royce dello spinning costiero, ma per ve vale fino all'ultimo centesimo.

We will try it mor extensively in future, as this is the classic example of a rod that stays glued to my hand :D 

Components are of course first quality for a rod of this high level, a sober black blank with no unuseful gimmicks, a reel seat with second safety screw ring, ultra light Torzite rings with K style form beginning to end, double feet where needed for a important rod. 
Of course beautiful things have their right cost.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS: GALAHAD 73/4 LONG FALL JIG ROD BY YAMAGA BLANKS

Una canna che mi aveva sempre incuriosito sulla carta, ne ho ordinate un paio su richiesta di clienti dello shop e mi ha impressionato al punto che ne ho voluta provare una anch'io, pur non essendo dedito allo slow jig molto spesso.

It is a rod I've always been curious about looking at paper catalogue, I odrered some for my shop customers and I was impressed, so I decided to try one myself, even if I don't slow jig so often.

La prima cosa che stupisce in una canna per uso verticale è la lunghezza insolita, 7 piedi e 3 pollici, con assemblaggio offset per ridurne l'ingombro nel trasporto, sembrano tanti, ma in realtà in pesca sono risultati molto maneggevoli e contribuiscono non poco al controllo dell'artificiale in corrente; la sigla "long fall" infatti indica una presentazione in slow jigging con cadute particolarmente prolungate, che quindi necessitano di lunghezza superiore alle classiche 6 piedi.

First thing that comes to attention is the unusual lenght for a vertical rod, 7 feet and 3 inches, even with offset construction for an easier packing, seems plenty, but on the fishing ground it felt very easy to handle and that added lenght contributes a lot to control the lure in current: "long fall" label indicate a rod that is designed for a slow jigging presentation with very long drops between jerks and so needing a longer rod to master.

L'azione sull'esca è un po' più fast, proprio in virtù della leva posteriore aumentata, ma ciò apre anche ad altri scenari d'uso. In particolare l'ho trovata perfetta per manovrare jig heads con soft plastic, tipo i classici Black Minnow o Sandeel, ma anche Inchiku e Kabura nelle versioni "muscled up" che mi piace usare per i predatori seri, ma della tecnica ne abbiamo già parlato qui in passato.

Action on the lure is somewhat faster, as backbone part of blank is longer, but this construction open the use also to other kind of jigging. I found it perfect to move big jigheads with soft plastic, like usual Black Minnow or Sand Eels, but also beefed up Inchikus and Kaburas that I like to use for serious predatory fishes, for a remind to the technique and lures just check here  ( only in Italian at that time. sorry about that )

Le prove pratiche mi hanno fatto catturare alcune Otholite, parenti africani delle nostre ombrine, tra cui una bellissima "snake" da 11 kg... sono pesci potenti e dalla mangiata rabbiosa, e sia in ferrata che in combattimento nessun problema per la canna, anzi una curva molto piacevole, elevata sensibilità e una grande riserva di potenza per un attrezzo del genere.

On the fishing grounds I caught some good otholites, including a nice "snake" of 11 kilos that put up quite a fight in the fast drift .... those are powerful fishes with angry hit, but no problem for the rod both on strike and during the fight, but a very pleasant curve, high sensibility and a lot of backbone for a tool in this class.

L'impressione è che le capacità della canna vadano oltre i dati, almeno per quanto riguarda la potenza e gestione delle prede.... ce la porteremo magari anche in altre destinazioni come Laccadive e Colombia per avere un quadro più completo, ma l'idea è quella di un attrezzo polivalente capace di passare dallo slow alla gomma al vertical più tradizionale senza battere ciglio... vedremo come si troverà coi long jigs a ricciole o con il long jerk a doggies, ma le aspettative sono alte.

I had the impression that rod capabilities go well beyond the label datas, at least concerning power and fight of preys... I will bring it in other destinations, maybe Lakshadweep and Colombia, to have a more complete impression, but the idea is of a versatile tool that can pass from slow pitch to soft plastic to classic vertical jigging without problems... I'll see how it will deal with AJs with long jigs or doggies on fast jerking, but expectations are high.

Come note tecniche, bello il montaggio a spirale e ottima la lunghezza del manico anche per uno alto come me... ne parleremo ancora.

As a technical note, very nice the spiral guides and perfect long lenght of the handle also for people tall like me ... I feel we'll talk again about this rod.

MY LURES FOR KERE' ... GUINEA BISSAU

Ok, si avvicina quel tempo dell'anno in cui programmiamo il nostro solito e piacevole trip in Guinea Bissau, questa volta sarà a Dicembre, dal 9 al 16, e se qualcuno vuole venire assieme a noi mi contatti pure.
I ragazzi che vengono la prima volta mi hanno chiesto che tipo di artificiali portare; e quindi è nata l'idea di un piccolo vademecum sugli artificiali che mi piace usare a Kerè, parlando di spinning per ora, le presentazioni verticali un'altra volta magari.
Quelle che espongo sono le mie scelte, sulla base dell'esperienza maturata in alcuni anni sia mia che di altri amici; non prendete marche e modelli come assoluti, voglio piuttosto trasmettere le tipologie di artificiali che uso, ben sapendo che sul mercato ci sono mille alternative validissime.
Magari mi soffermerò in particolare su qualche modello che produco personalmente, dato che queste acque sono spesso state il banco di prova per molti di quei modelli.

The time of the trip to Guinea Bissau is coming fast, as almost every autumn in past years; we choosed the week between 9th to 16th of December, still places left if anybody wants to join us for great light tackle fun; just contact me.
My firsttimer friends asked me about the lures i usually bring to Kerè, all about spinning here, maybe we'll talk jigging on another occasion.
What I am going to expose here are just my personal choices, on the base of past experiences acquired during several years by me and my friends; brands and models are not absolutes, just a way to show the types and carachteristics of the lures I use; so many valid alternatives on the market.
Maybe I will talk more about some models that I produce personally, because these waters have been their testing fields in many occasions.

In ordine di pesantezza, partendo dalla canna tuttofare ( PE 2, max 3 per un oncia e mezza di max lure weight più o meno ) cominciamo dal topwater; immancabili i wtd che risultano una delle migliori esche per gli snapper, idem per i pencil che hanno come target primario i carangidi,e pure qualche popperino valido per entrambi; taglia dai 10 cm ai 14 in acque basse,
In linea di massima preferisco esche in legno, che continuano a lavorare anche una volta addentate e bucate da pesci di taglia, ma anche nel campo della plastica ci sono ottimi prodotti.

Let's start with the light side of the spectrum, the lures for that allrounder rod ( Pe2, max 3, one to one once and half as max lure weight more or less ); I begin with topwaters: indispensable walking sticks that are possibly the best choice for snappers, pencil poppers, more tailored for caranx family even if also other fishes like them and some nice little popper: sizes 10 to 14 cm in the relatively shallow areas.
As a general idea I prefere wooden lures over plastic because they keep working even when deeply bitten by big fishes without sucking water inside ( if well built ), but also in plastic field there are a lot of good products.

Nello specifico della foto, fila di sinistra dall'alto: Alle's Habano 110 per 30 grammi, molto massiccio e ad elevata galleggiabilità; Alle's Slender Habano 100, più leggero e meno rumoroso, perfetto per le condizioni di bassa marea; Xorus Patchinko, ottimo allrounder; Megabass Giant DogX per il quale valgono le stesse considerazioni dello Slender Habano.
A destra: Alle's bichito 130 e 100, 30 e 22 grammi, un piccolo pencil estremamente versatile con la possibilità di popperare in caso di bisogno e con uno storico di catture spettacolare in queste acque; Alle's dorado 90 ( ma anche 130  ), perfetto per recuperi veloci in acque aperte o nei flussi di marea con acqua limpida entrante; Alle's Micropop, 19 grammi, popper nuotatore dall'elevato scodinzolio.
Come accennato prima ci sono mille sostituti sul mercato per queste esche e ognuno può trovare i suoi preferiti.

A livello colori, pur avendo messo un mix di tinte, sono le livree naturali a fare di solito da padrone, unitamente al bianco che è un po' l'indispensabile jolly in queste zone.

Talking about colors, even if i put a mix of different shades in the pics, best choices are usually the natural colors, and the white that is a true "must have" in this area.

A sinistra dall'alto: Alle's Lancillo, uno stick dal movimento stretto in resina da 18 cm per 50 gr che ha un appeal particolare per le cubere, armatura passante e quasi indistruttibile; Alle's Woomera, 12.5 cm per 50 gr idem come il precedente ma con un nuoto differente che in certi momenti è preferito; Ima Honey Trap 95 e Northcraft Ballistick minnow 100, classici lipless sinking universali in acqua bassa o in presenza di foraggio piccolo; Northcraft VP Shad 95 HS, da 9.5 cm per 34 gr, un vibration di buon peso utile per sondare le buche profonde.
A destra: un buon jerkminnow, anche se non amo molto questa tipologia di esche al tropico per la insita fragilità, in questo caso uno dei pochi ad armatura passante e dal movimento decisamente interessante, ovvero il Nemesi 180; un Duo tide surf e un Daiwa morethan, due minnow extra shallow che possono lavorare sopra le rocce sommerse anche in una spanna d'acqua; il classicissimo Bfreeze 100 della Lucky Craft che piglia tutto ovunque; Ima Sasuke 120 e 105, classici darter, molto efficaci specialmente il piccolo sugli snapper.
Ultimo sotto un vecchio Tackle house in legno che lavora appena sotto il pelo dell'acqua se non addirittura in topwater.

Per la pesca di ricerca del pesce di taglia, principalmente jack crevalle e fishery, african cuberas di taglia non eccessiva, qualche barracuda e magari cobia, gli artificiali sono commisurati ad una PE4 da 70-80 grammi, e per me solo floating o quasi:

Alle's stickbait da 70 grammi, molto reattivo per acque aperte e ricerca veloce; stick artigianale AB lures da 16 cm ad elevata galleggiabilità; popper da 80 grammi Alle's, per richiamare i pesci di passaggio nei canali profondi come quello di Formosa; Decopen floating da 18 cm, classico stick allrounder.
A destra: Alle's Bichito 70 gr, perfetto per i grossi jack in corrente; Lamble Bait haoli Pencil, facile facile, quasi automatico e molto efficace sui grandi jack; Decopen 16 cm, come il fratello maggiore; Skagit Design Pumpkin, classico popper a collo di bottiglia per una pesca di caccia in acque velate.

RIPPLE FISHER MONSTER IMPACT REDEYE 88

Quando ordino canne della Ripple Fisher per i clienti del mio negozio, solitamente si tratta di modelli da pesca tropicale o da tonno, che ben si sono fatti conoscere al top dell'ambiente; meno frequentemente succede di importare degli splendidi attrezzi per le pesche medie in lunghezze diciamo canoniche tra i 7 e gli 8 piedi oppure canne da shorejigging, ma finora pochissime erano state le richieste per una canna da seabass e simili, vuoi per la tradizione italiana di affrontare questa pesca con canne corte, vuoi per il costo elevato di tali gioielli.

Ora invece un amico mi ha fatto una precisa richiesta per una canna che ancora non conoscevo, la Monster Impact Red Eye 88; ora che ce l'ho davanti, per verificare che non ci siano stati problemi di spedizione, posso ammirare un attrezzo che ha pochi paragoni nella mia esperienza e oltre il tipico concetto di canna da seabass.
Non è infatti una canna da suzuki, pur avendo una notevole sensibilità in vetta non ha l'azione profonda tipica di quei modelli ma è decisamente più reattiva; non è una canna da shore jigging anche se non ho dubbi che vi si potrebbe adattare benissimo; è una canna nata specificamente per ricercare l'Akame, Lates japonicus, uno strettissimo parente del persico del nilo e del Barramundi, direi una fotocopia vivente, che però vive nelle acque del sud del Giappone.
E' un avversario raro e sospettoso, che richiede artificiali relativamente leggeri e risulta difficile da avvicinare, per cui è d'obbligo avere una canna sensibile per lanciare comuni e a volte non così comuni minnows e topwater ma dotata di quel nerbo necessario a combattere pesci che possono arrivare a oltre 30 kg in estuari poco ospitali.

Con dette premesse, e con la sua lunghezza e azione, risulterebbe perfetta anche in scogliera, ben pochi dentici potrebbero impensierirla pur potendo giocare agevolmente con minnow di una decina di cm, per non parlare di un possibile surf fishing dalla spiaggia, in generale ovunque serva potenza di combattimento ma anche capacità di gestione di esche leggere. Lecce, serra, spigolone, e tanti altri predatori sono tutti sulla lista delle prede ricercabili con la Redeye 88.

I freddi dati dicono:

Lunghezza: 8'8" ossia 2 metri e 64 in due pezzi uguali, ma esiste una versione da 9'3"
Peso: 163 grammi ovvero una piuma
Lure Weight: fino a 40 gr suggeriti
Line class: fino PE 2.5
Mulinello adatto: classe 4000-5000 Shimano o 3000-3500 Daiwa

Anelli e finiture ovviamente al top, con materiale Fuji serie K

Colore di serie nero con la feticistica possibilità di farsela preparare in una notevole gamma di tinte metallizzate o perlate, con ovviamente la giusta attesa e spesa.
Da tutto ciò ne deriva una canna spettacolare, onestamente me ne sono innamorato e l'insano tarlo che alberga nel mio cervello sta pensando seriamente di ordinarne una quanto prima, magari da portare a spasso sulle spiagge della Giunea Bissau, le scogliere del Marocco o le sponde disabitate di una certa parte di Cuba.

LA SOTTILE LINEA ROSSA ...

No, non parliamo di un film di guerra in questo caso, ma di alcune costatazioni sulla livrea dei nostri plastichetti. Il rosso in questione è quello che contraddistingue ad esempio il colore cosiddetto "bleeding sardine" dal più classico sardina.

Una modifica apparentemente da poco, che in passato ho sottovalutato spesso; ma, dopo i feedback di alcuni amici e le varie prove in acqua, sembra che ci sia qualcosa di concreto che differenzia nei risultati le due livree apparentemente simili:

 

 

Il minnow di destra idealmente imiterebbe un pesciolino ferito e sanguinante, e pare dall'esperienza pratica che riesca abbastanza spesso a fare la differenza nel numero di attacchi specialmente in situazioni di mangianza prolungata o tendente alla fine.

Nulla di nuovo come concetto, le colorazioni "sanguinanti" esistono da una vita, interessante però il fatto che molti di noi, me compreso fino a poco tempo fa, tendano a sottovalutarle.

 

Per non sbagliare tanto vale provare, e non vale solo col tonno rosso, ma anche coi pelagici minori, tombarelli, sgombri, alletterati e via dicendo

 

A dire il vero nella seconda foto c'è un ulteriore aspetto da approfondire forse, il "sardina scura" Vs "sardina chiara"... altra piccola variabile cromatica che però ha i suoi riscontri, specie al cambiare di mare; ad esempio i pesci foraggio dell'Adriatico sottocosta sono di colore più chiaro di quelli del Tirreno o addirittura dello stesso Adriatico molte miglia fuori, complice l'adattamento ad acque più o meno ricche di plancton e sospensione.

 

Troppe paranoie? Chissà potremmo aver preso qualche abbaglio, ma i numeri sembrano confermare la tendenza dei pesci con ottime capacità visive a discernere questi particolari, ovviamente in condizioni di selettività e non di quelle mangianze rabbiose in cui un po' tutto viene attaccato.

THE THIN RED LINE

 

We aren't talking about a war movie, but something about the chromatic patterns of our lures.

The red we're talking about is the one on the belly of the "bleeding sardine".

 

An apparently small modification that I often overlooked in the past; but after some friend's feedbacks and various experiments, it seems there's something that really make difference between the results of the two so similar patterns.

 

The left Flitz should imitate a little forage fish that has been wounded and that's is leaving a blood trail, and in practice it seems to make the difference in regards to the similar one without red belly, especially in situations with long lasting or ending frenzies.

Nothing new, "bleeding" colorations have been around for a long while, but it's interesting the fact that many of us, including me until some time ago, tend to overlook them.

 

Just not to make mistake it's worth to try them, and not only with bluefin tunas, but with all small schooling pelagic fishes, like horse mackerel, bonitos, little tunny and so on.

 

There's indeed another aspect to underline about the second pic, the "dark sardine" Vs "light sardine".... another little color variable that has it's rewards, especially when changing sea body; for example, little forage fishes in coastal Adriatic sea are lighter in shade than tirrenian ones or even offshore Adriatic waters, due to adaptment to environments with differnt plancton and sediment contents.

 

Too many speculations? Maybe, we could have seen a mirage, but numbers seem to confirmate the tendency of well seeing fishes to choose among those little things, of course in selective situations and not during those angry frenzies when everything that's cast in the water goes hitten.

STICKBAIT PER IL TONNO .... TUNA STICKBAITS

Una rapida rassegna dopo tre anni di utilizzo in varie condizioni e relativamente ai mari della nostra penisola, soprattutto l'Adriatico centro settentrionale.
Molti ne abbiamo provati, abbiamo scelto i preferiti e i più affidabili, talvolta per risultati esplosivi in breve tempo, talvolta per costanza nel lungo periodo, talvolta come arma di situazione per condizioni particolari... vediamoli insieme:

A quick review after three years of use in various conditions in the seas surrounding Italy, more oftern the central-northern Adriatic sea.
We tested many models, and we ended choosing our preferred ones, the most dependable, sometimes for explosive results in short time, sometimes for constancy in the long period, sometimes like special weapon for unusual situations.... let's take a look:

Nature Boys Surfish Tuna.

180 mm per 90 grammi, affondante, plastica cava, armatura passante.
Un generico per ogni situazione e dalla resa ottima, messo in acqua non è che impressioni molto per il suo movimento, ma la costanza e abbondanza di risultati dimostra che i tonni la pensano in modo diverso da noi. Peccato solo la poca reperibilità dovuta a una produzione saltuaria.

An allround lure with a very good track record, in the water doesn't strike our eye for his limited movement, but constant and abundant results show us that the tuna don't think the same way we do. A pity it's not always easy to find due to an inconstant production.

Tre misure per questo stick affondante in legno costruito in Giappone, armatura ovviamente passante.

Lo stiamo usando da poco ma con risultati ottimi e a volte eccezionali; le prime due taglie vanno benissimo quando il tonno mangia piccolo e la 150 è una perfetta esca allround.

L'imitatività di questi artificiali è eccellente e convince spesso anche i tonni più sospettosi

We've been using it for short time but with excellent results; the two smaller sizes are perfect when tuna are selective on small forage, the 150 size is a classical allround.

The imitative capacity of these lures are fantastic, and they often trigger strikes by the most wary tunas.

Maria Loaded 140S

140 mm per 55 gr, affondante, plastica cava con armatura passante.

Valido ed economico, perfetto per iniziare anche se la plastica non si rivela delle più robuste, va bene per attrezzature non troppo pesanti.

Good and cheap, perfect to begin but the plastic body it's not very strong, it's ok with medium weight tackle.

Heru Bobara

Due taglie disponibili valide per il tonno, ve ne sarebbe anche una terza più grande ma la lasciamo ai GT; costruiti artigianalmente in Indonesia, legno, armatura passante, affondanti.

-50 gr per 14.5 cm

-100 gr per 18.5 cm

Esca dal movimento molto vivace in grado di scatenare abboccate di tonni svogliati, molto valida sia in mangianza che in caccia.

Un gioiello artigianale dagli Stati Uniti, estremamente imitativo e credibile in acqua grazie alla cura dei dettagli e ad un movimento particolarmente convincente, una delle esche a cui ricorrere quando i tonni non ne vogliono sapere delle nostre imitazioni e vogliamo essere il più realistici possibile.

22 cm and 90 grams, slow sinking, resin construction, through wire.

A custom jewel from United States, very imitative in the water thanks to the detailed finish and a very convincing movement; one of the lures to resort when tuna don't want to strike our lures and we want to exactly "match the hatch".

 Due taglie disponibili, costruzione in plastica cava con armatura passante, galleggiante.

-16 cm per 58 gr

Lo abbiamo trovato abbastanza facile da usare, contrariamente a altre recensioni, ricorda un po' il Loaded di Maria ma è decisamente più robusto, anche se le ancorette sarebbero da sostituire secondo noi.

Ha un uso un po' particolare di "caccia", da usare attorno alle mangianze di foraggio molto piccolo a imitazione di un piccolo predatore concorrente ( tecnica che funziona spesso con gli esemplari grandi di tonno ), oppure alla cieca intorno a punti di raduno come piattaforme, relitti e altri spot. Ovviamente va anche molto bene per imitare foraggio di taglia, in particolare muggini sul taglio di corrente fuori dalle foci importanti.

In condizioni di poca luminosità si è rivelata catturante la volorazione viola-oro.

We found it quite easy to use in spite to other web review; it reminds to the Maria Loaded but it's quite more strong, we suggest to change the treble hooks.

We used it like a "hunting" stickbait, perfect aroud the very small sardine balls to imitate a little predatory fish to trigger reaction strikes ( an approach that often works with big specimen of tuna ), or in blind casting around interesting spots like gas rigs, wrecks and other spots.

Of course it's also very good to imitate big size forage fishes, speciphically mullets around current breaks outside river mouths.

In low visibility situations the gold-purple color has shown to be very effective.

Commenti e situazioni di uso sono più o meno gli stessi dell'Orca di poco sopra; sicuramente un ottimo artificiale.

18.5 cm per 88 gr, plastica cava, armatura passante, galleggiante.

E' la versione grande e floating del fratellino 150; come lui molto mobile e facile da usare pur con assetto differente. Perfetto per gli stessi scenari dell'Orca, con un movimento differente e plasmabile che talvolta risulta più adescante a seconda delle preferenze dei tonni; vale la pena avere entrambi.

18.5 cm and 88 grams, hollow plastic, through wire, floating.

It's the bigger brother of the 150; very mobile and easy to use but with a different asset. It's perfect for the same scenario in which we suggest the Orca, but, having a different beat and movement sometimes it gives difeerent results, it depends on the preference of the tunas; we suggest to carry both model with you.

Noi consigliamo le due taglie più piccole

E' molto affusolato e leggero, cosa che lo rende da un lato fragile ma dall'altro estremamente adescante nel movimento; la finitura è di una brillantezza unica.

E' difficile da reperire e molto costoso, ma può cambiare la giornata dato che in certe situazioni cattura solo lui; vedete voi se il vostro tempo e divertimento e i soldi del pieno della barca possono venire compensati dalle doti di questo artificiale. Per noi un'"arma segreta" da portare sempre.

We suggest the two smallest sizes.

It's very thin and light, and that makes it fragile but extremely mobile and convincing; the shine of the finish is unmatched.

It's diffcult to find and expensive, but it can change your day as sometimes it's the only lure that elicits a strike; your choice to evaluate if your time and amusement, and the fuel consumpion ofthe day, can be compensated by the value of this stick. For us it's a "secret weapon" to always carry.
