A LURE I LIKE , MEGABASS TRIGYA FLAPPER 200

"A lure I like", un titoletto per parlare adesso e in futuro di alcuni artificiali che mi hanno impressionato in maniera molto positiva... in piena libertà intellettuale, comprati e pagati e usati e abusati sul campo :) ... i classici "my two cents" per chiunque fosse interessato.

L'idea mi è venuta dall'esca del titolo, ovvero il Flapper 200 della Megabass, comprato in asta a un prezzo d'occasione la prima volta, ricomprato da un amico la seconda volta dopo che una cubera XXL mi aveva rapito il primo in Colombia

E' un classico stick galleggiante, molto leggero per la misura, infatti pesa 75 grammi soltanto, ma posso confermare che si spara benissimo in distanza su attrezzatura da GT nella classe PE 8, nello specifico ho usato la seguente:

Trecciato Varivas Avani GT Max Power Orange PE8
Finale Varivas Nylon 140 lbs

La forma è un po' inconsueta, molto appiattita di lato, ma ciononostante il nuoto è molto vivace a patto di non sovraccaricarlo con ami troppo pesanti.
Io mi sono trovato benissimo con una coppia di ancorette Owner ST66 del 3/0 o con un combo Gamakatsu GT Recorder 5/0 davanti e single Varivas Papa Style 6/0 sul retro.

La caratteristica principale è la forte emissione di flash dovuti all'olografia e alla ampiezza della superficie laterale, ottima per richiamare i pesci da lontano sia in giornate coperte come trovato in Colombia, che luminose come alle Andamane.

E' fatto in schiuma, probabilmente poliuretanica, ma ha sempre resistito bene a numerosi morsi; armatura passante con girella ventrale che lascia il giusto grado di libertà e scarica le torsioni... insomma un oggettino proprio fatto bene.

Ci ho preso mackerel, jacks e cubere in Colombia e GT alle Andaman, molti pesci di taglia interessante ma pure un paio di mostri, una cubera over 30 che lo ha aggiunto alla collezione della sua tana e un GT veramente bello che purtroppo si è slamato nel recupero in una giornata sfigata.
Un "pescetto" da avere con se in mille destinazioni, da Cuba alle Maldive, al Madagascar, alla Colombia, Andamane, Sudan e via di questo passo...

Adesso che si è conquistato un posto fisso nella mia tackle box tropicale, sono curioso di provare le altre taglie...

"A lure I like" is a title to talk freely of some lure I especially liked on the field... the classic "my two cents" for anybody could be interested.

First subject is the Megabass Flapper 200, i got my first on auction and bought a second soon after a big Cubera took that one for its collection.

It is a classic floating Stickbait, very light for its size as it weights 75 grams, but I can say it casts very well on PE8 class GT tackle; I used Ripple Fisher Ultimo 79MH, Stella 10000FA with 16000 spool and Varivas Avani GT PE8 orange, 140 lbs Varivas nylon leader.

Shape is unusual, very flat on the side, but the movement is very active and easy to master as lon as we don't overcharge it... i used with pair of ST66 in 3/0 and also with combo GT recorder 5/0 on belly  and single Seriola Papa Style 6/0 on tail.

It emits a lot of flashes due to the holo finish and the wide side, perfect to attract fishes from far away both in cloudy conditions as I found in Colombia and bright sunlight we met in Andaman.

It seems to be made in poliutetanic foam, that resisted very well to numerous bites of toothy critters...through wire with belly swivel that assure to contrast possible torsions... a very well built lure.

I got numerous mid sizes fishes, macks, GTs, cuberas and jacks, and lost a couple giants, a over 30 cubera that wanted it for personal collection and a big GT that throw the hook during the fight...

After two intense weeks of use I think it will find a fixed space in my tackle box and I will surely try its bigger and smaller brothers in future.

NUOVI LURES IN RESINA - TESTING REPORTS

Da circa una anno e mezzo sto seguendo il progetto di alcuni piccoli artificiali in resina, anzichè il solito legno; nascono dalla necessità, riscontrata direttamente in pesca, di avere esche contenute nelle dimensioni ma assolutamente a prova di pesce grosso o enorme, un'esca da spigole nelle proporzioni ma capace di non cedere sotto le pressioni della pesca tropicale; troppe volte ho avuto esche di fabbrica spezzate o private dell'armatura da pesci un po' troppo cresciutelli per il loro target.

I've been for one year and half after the project of some small resin lures instead of usual wood: they are born by the field call of a presentation of diminutive dimensions but still capable of landing very big and strong fishes, practically seabass lures in proportions but able to withstand hard tropical and pelagic fishing... too many times I saw factroy lures broken or stripped of the wire by too big fishes.

Pescare nelle mangrovie o sul reef può alle volte richiedere un'esca piccola, ma le sollecitazioni di un grosso snook o barramundi o cubera o altro possono mandare in pezzi un minnow da scaffale; stesso discorso per la pesca ai pelagici, quando grossi tonni e simili si cibano selettivamente su foraggio piccino.

Servono quindi in pratica poche mirate caratteristiche che sono quelle che ho ricercato nello sviluppo dei lures che vi presento poi:
- Una sagoma robusta e compatta
- Un'armatura passante chiusa a prova di trazioni e torsioni anche per attrezzi da 80 libbre e più
- Capacità di sostenere ami e ancorette molto robusti sia pure in taglie ridotte.

Fishing among the mangroves or above the reef might demand sometimes a small lure, but the power of a big snook or barramundi or cubera or something else can destroy out of shelf minnows and topwaters; same thing for bluewater when big tunas and friends feed selectively on small forage.

So we need few on target carachteristics that I searched for while projecting these new creatures:
- a strong and compact shape
- a closed through wire that can withstand torsion and pull on 80 lbs tackle or more,
- the ability to be dressed with very strong hooks even if in reduced sizes

I tre primi modelli delle cui capacità pescanti sono soddisfatto sono i seguenti:

Here are the first three models I am satisfied about:

- uno stick affondante da 12.5 cm per 50 e 60 grammi ( due pesi ), battezzato "Woomera", ovvero come un'antica arma aborigena da lancio, da un amico australiano per le capacità di gittata eccezionali; dopotutto nasce da mangianza anche se si batte benissimo pure dalla costa e per i pesci delle acque costiere; affondamento orizzontale e grande stabilità alle jerkate aggressive, con un accentuato scodinzolio.

- il "Lancillo", un ibrido jerk minnow senza paletta-stickbait affondante orizzontale da 18 cm per 35 e 50 grammi, nato come primo prototipo circa dieci anni fa ma ripreso di recente, sia per il classico approccio per i barra nostrani che per ogni situazione in cui i predatori cercano aguglie, ballyhoo o comunque foraggio di forma allungata.

this is "Lancillo", a hybrid between a lipless long jerk and a sinking stick, 18 cm in two weights of 35 and 50 grams, horizontal sinking again; was first born about ten years ago for classic mediterranean barracuda fishing but taken out of dust recently to prove itself with any kind of predators when they want slim forage like garfish and needlefish and so on.

- l' "Ayno", che ho chiamato così per tutte le volte in cui ho dovuto rifare il prototipo perchè non pienamente soddisfatto e in cui ho esclamato "Ahi, no!" ( o anche peggio :D ); un popper-darter, galleggia, poppera sullo strappo, per poi scendere sotto la superficie con un ampio movimento di wobbling e rolling quasi da minnow; 10.5 cm per 22 grammi

and "Ayno", so called for so many "Ahi, no!" for any times I had to redue and modify it :D; it is a floating darter/popper, it pops on the beginning of retrieve and then swims with ambple wobbling and rolling like a minnow lure; 10.5 cm for 22 grams.

Se il Woomera e il Lancillo sono praticamente promossi, l'Ayno mantiene fede all'ispirazione del nome... lavora bene come volevo, si lancia ottimamente, piglia anche parecchi pesci ma ha un punto debole insito nel materiale stesso: la parte inferiore della bocca si è consumata rapidamente toccando le rocce dure delle Bijagos, non che col legno sarebbe differente, e magari non sarebbe un problema per pescare sotto alle mangrovie come da idea originale, ma volendo un'esca universale e robusta dovrò trovare una soluzione al problemino... a presto Ayno 3.0

I am satisfied by Woomera and Lancillo but Ayno keeps faith to the origin of name... it works well as I wanted, casts very well, catch a lot of fishes, but it showed a weak point in lower part of bill that get easily worn with prolongued contacts of rocks and coral; with wood it would be same and it wouldn't be a problem fishing under the mangroves for example as by original plan, but i want a lure that can be used everywhere and i must find a solution ( something already buzzing in my head ) ... soon will be Ayno 3.0

IL FUTURO DI PLASTICA ?

C'erano una volta le belle e care esche in legno fatte a mano... e ci sono ancora, ma sempre più spesso appaiono sul mercato nuovi artificiali di produzione di massa pensati per le pesche gravose e realizzati in plastica. Certo non hanno il fascino dell'artigianato, ma la loro qualità è andata aumentando fino ad offrirci degli ottimi oggetti dalle prestazioni veramente notevoli
I tempi delle esche "cheap" in schiuma con la vernice che saltava a guardarla sono lontani e, avendo avuto il piacere di fare un po' di shopping compulsivo ne ho potute provare diverse in pesca.

Once upon a time there were the old fashionable wooden lures.... and they still are there :D But  in recet times are appearing more and more mass producted plastic lures thinked for heavy fishing.
They might not have the appeal of custom ones but their quality has improved until the production of very nice objects with great  effectiveness.

Shimano, IMA, Duo, Tackle House, tra quelle che mi piacciono ma non solo loro, presentano in catalogo dei lures decisamente efficaci e che danno la possibilità di dedicarsi alle pesche pesanti senza svenarsi... al prezzo di un GT gamma possiamo prendere 4 Orca 220 ad esempio, e se proprio il mostro pinnuto ci strapperà la lenza non piangeremo così a lungo ma potremo montare a cuor leggero il prossimo artificiale...

Shimano, IMA, Duo, Tackle House all offer lures that I like a lot, but they're not the only ones. Price is often the good new, we could buy 4 orcas 220 for example at the price of a single Gt gamma, and if the line ever break we'll not cry that badly but proceed to tie next lure on the end of the line...

Ma non solo loro, tutte esche molto robuste con armatura passante che resistono ad un buon numero di attacchi se..... non incontrano un grosso barracuda o una cubera....

Il problema sono solo i buchi, una volta aperti si riempiono d'acqua e non lavorano più, contrariamente al legno che, se trattato a dovere in fase di costruzione, continua a galleggiare e  lavorare..

All the above lures are very though compared to old plastic generation, with through wire, and they withstand a good number of attacks... at least if we don'ìt encounter a big barracuda or a mean cubera snapper. Problem is just about theet holes, once pounched the lure fills with water and doesn't work anymore; the opposite of wood that continues to float and work if treated as should during the construction.

 

Aspettiamoci per il futuro un aumento di questo tipo di artificiali, perfetti per l'esordio tropicale ma anche validi strumenti nelle mani di chiunque, "esperti" compresi... anche se il fascino di un oggetto "custom" in legno come questo Shell Shaping Lure è comunque difficile da imitare :D

We must espect more models to fill the market in next future, the trend is plastic; they're perfect for the tropical beginner but also good weapons in experienced hands.... even if the charm of a custom wood like the Shell Shaping below will be hard to reach....

  

STICKBAIT PER IL TONNO .... TUNA STICKBAITS

Una rapida rassegna dopo tre anni di utilizzo in varie condizioni e relativamente ai mari della nostra penisola, soprattutto l'Adriatico centro settentrionale.
Molti ne abbiamo provati, abbiamo scelto i preferiti e i più affidabili, talvolta per risultati esplosivi in breve tempo, talvolta per costanza nel lungo periodo, talvolta come arma di situazione per condizioni particolari... vediamoli insieme:

A quick review after three years of use in various conditions in the seas surrounding Italy, more oftern the central-northern Adriatic sea.
We tested many models, and we ended choosing our preferred ones, the most dependable, sometimes for explosive results in short time, sometimes for constancy in the long period, sometimes like special weapon for unusual situations.... let's take a look:

Nature Boys Surfish Tuna.

180 mm per 90 grammi, affondante, plastica cava, armatura passante.
Un generico per ogni situazione e dalla resa ottima, messo in acqua non è che impressioni molto per il suo movimento, ma la costanza e abbondanza di risultati dimostra che i tonni la pensano in modo diverso da noi. Peccato solo la poca reperibilità dovuta a una produzione saltuaria.

180 mm, 90 grams, sinking, hollow plastic, through wire.
An allround lure with a very good track record, in the water doesn't strike our eye for his limited movement, but constant and abundant results show us that the tuna don't think the same way we do. A pity it's not always easy to find due to an inconstant production.

Tre misure per questo stick affondante in legno costruito in Giappone, armatura ovviamente passante.

Lo stiamo usando da poco ma con risultati ottimi e a volte eccezionali; le prime due taglie vanno benissimo quando il tonno mangia piccolo e la 150 è una perfetta esca allround.

L'imitatività di questi artificiali è eccellente e convince spesso anche i tonni più sospettosi

We've been using it for short time but with excellent results; the two smaller sizes are perfect when tuna are selective on small forage, the 150 size is a classical allround.

The imitative capacity of these lures are fantastic, and they often trigger strikes by the most wary tunas.

Ottimo e versatile, con un movimento estremamente convincente e facile da utilizzare, un must nella cassetta.

Excellent and versatile, with a very attractive movement and easy to master, a "must have" in the tackle box.

Maria Loaded 140S

140 mm per 55 gr, affondante, plastica cava con armatura passante.

Valido ed economico, perfetto per iniziare anche se la plastica non si rivela delle più robuste, va bene per attrezzature non troppo pesanti.

140 mm and 55 grams, sinking with plastic hollow body, through wire construction.

Good and cheap, perfect to begin but the plastic body it's not very strong, it's ok with medium weight tackle.

Heru Bobara

Due taglie disponibili valide per il tonno, ve ne sarebbe anche una terza più grande ma la lasciamo ai GT; costruiti artigianalmente in Indonesia, legno, armatura passante, affondanti.

-50 gr per 14.5 cm

-100 gr per 18.5 cm

Esca dal movimento molto vivace in grado di scatenare abboccate di tonni svogliati, molto valida sia in mangianza che in caccia.

A lure with very active movement, able to trigger stikes from inactive fishes, perfect in the frenzies but also while blind casting.

22 cm per 90 grammi circa, lentamente affondante, resina, armatura passante.

Un gioiello artigianale dagli Stati Uniti, estremamente imitativo e credibile in acqua grazie alla cura dei dettagli e ad un movimento particolarmente convincente, una delle esche a cui ricorrere quando i tonni non ne vogliono sapere delle nostre imitazioni e vogliamo essere il più realistici possibile.

22 cm and 90 grams, slow sinking, resin construction, through wire.

A custom jewel from United States, very imitative in the water thanks to the detailed finish and a very convincing movement; one of the lures to resort when tuna don't want to strike our lures and we want to exactly "match the hatch".

 Due taglie disponibili, costruzione in plastica cava con armatura passante, galleggiante.

-16 cm per 58 gr

-19 cm per 88 gr

Lo abbiamo trovato abbastanza facile da usare, contrariamente a altre recensioni, ricorda un po' il Loaded di Maria ma è decisamente più robusto, anche se le ancorette sarebbero da sostituire secondo noi.

Ha un uso un po' particolare di "caccia", da usare attorno alle mangianze di foraggio molto piccolo a imitazione di un piccolo predatore concorrente ( tecnica che funziona spesso con gli esemplari grandi di tonno ), oppure alla cieca intorno a punti di raduno come piattaforme, relitti e altri spot. Ovviamente va anche molto bene per imitare foraggio di taglia, in particolare muggini sul taglio di corrente fuori dalle foci importanti.

In condizioni di poca luminosità si è rivelata catturante la volorazione viola-oro.

We found it quite easy to use in spite to other web review; it reminds to the Maria Loaded but it's quite more strong, we suggest to change the treble hooks.

We used it like a "hunting" stickbait, perfect aroud the very small sardine balls to imitate a little predatory fish to trigger reaction strikes ( an approach that often works with big specimen of tuna ), or in blind casting around interesting spots like gas rigs, wrecks and other spots.

Of course it's also very good to imitate big size forage fishes, speciphically mullets around current breaks outside river mouths.

In low visibility situations the gold-purple color has shown to be very effective.

Commenti e situazioni di uso sono più o meno gli stessi dell'Orca di poco sopra; sicuramente un ottimo artificiale.

Comments and use are more or less the same than Orca above, for sure an excellent lure.

Shimano Ocea Pencil BFT 185 

 

18.5 cm per 88 gr, plastica cava, armatura passante, galleggiante.

E' la versione grande e floating del fratellino 150; come lui molto mobile e facile da usare pur con assetto differente. Perfetto per gli stessi scenari dell'Orca, con un movimento differente e plasmabile che talvolta risulta più adescante a seconda delle preferenze dei tonni; vale la pena avere entrambi.

18.5 cm and 88 grams, hollow plastic, through wire, floating.

It's the bigger brother of the 150; very mobile and easy to use but with a different asset. It's perfect for the same scenario in which we suggest the Orca, but, having a different beat and movement sometimes it gives difeerent results, it depends on the preference of the tunas; we suggest to carry both model with you.

Tre taglie, galleggiante, armatura passante, costruzione balsa rivestita di schiuma.

Noi consigliamo le due taglie più piccole

E' molto affusolato e leggero, cosa che lo rende da un lato fragile ma dall'altro estremamente adescante nel movimento; la finitura è di una brillantezza unica.

E' difficile da reperire e molto costoso, ma può cambiare la giornata dato che in certe situazioni cattura solo lui; vedete voi se il vostro tempo e divertimento e i soldi del pieno della barca possono venire compensati dalle doti di questo artificiale. Per noi un'"arma segreta" da portare sempre.

We suggest the two smallest sizes.

It's very thin and light, and that makes it fragile but extremely mobile and convincing; the shine of the finish is unmatched.

It's diffcult to find and expensive, but it can change your day as sometimes it's the only lure that elicits a strike; your choice to evaluate if your time and amusement, and the fuel consumpion ofthe day, can be compensated by the value of this stick. For us it's a "secret weapon" to always carry.

Questi modelli non sono gli unici, abbiamo usato molti altri artificiali, alcuni validi, alcuni decisamente scarsi nonostante il blasone pubblicitario. Ci siamo pure riservati qualche segretuccio per adesso... la panoramica quindi non è completa.

Those models are not the only ones we used, we found good ones and bad ones, including some very spammed model. We also kept some little secrets for ourselves for now..... the overview it's far from completed.

IL VALORE DI UN'ESCA

The Value of a lure

Oggigiorno sul mercato c'è una scelta pressochè illimitata di artificiali, proprio un bel problema per un collezionista come me; ve ne è di ogni forma, colore, ma soprattutto prezzo.
Se per il normale spinnofilo italiano un'esca da 20-25 euro si può già considerare fuori dalla media, per i malati di tropicale arrivare a sborsare oltre cento euro per un singolo artificiale è cosa non così fuori dalla norma, idem per il pescatore incallito di tonni.
Ma hanno un senso quelle cifre? Non mi voglio pronunciare sul costo dei materiali, sulla necessità di finiture particolarmente acchiappanti per l'occhio o sul fatto che comunque anche esche dal costo inferiore danno spesso e volentieri ottimi risultati.

Andiamo per esempi: l'esca feticcio per eccellenza nel mondo dei pescatori di carangidi è l'arcifamoso GT-gamma, primo stickbait "handmade" a smuovere il mondo dei tropicalisti di tutto il globo, anche se non certamente la prima esca del genere prodotta nella patria Giappone.
All'atto pratico è un bel fuso di legno, rifinito in maniera molto ben fatta, che ha creato una schiera di pescatori affezionati che non possono quasi vivere senza; certi modelli e colori raggiungono prezzi esorbitanti nell'aftermarket.
A ben guardare non è nemmeno un'esca particolarmente resistente, anche se ogni simulacro legnoso ha comunque vita relativamente breve quanto messo a confronto con certe mascelle...

    
....... si scaglia, si stira l'armatura, si apre all'estremità posteriore spesso e volentieri, quindi perchè spendere 120-150-200 euro per uno di loro?
La risposta è facile, perchè saputo usare bene prende in maniera notevolmente superiore alla media, rende di più in condizioni difficili e ci può cambiare le giornate.... non è cosa da poco se pensiamo a quanto investiamo in un viaggio di pesca o anche semplicemente quanto ci rende contenti una bella cattura.
Io a lui devo il mio yellowfin più grosso e una bella schiera di pesci, pur dovendo ammettere di usarlo molto poco rispetto ad amici che magari lo hanno a fine lenza per l'80 percento del tempo.

A ben frugare ce ne è una bella schiera di piccoli produttori artigianali Giapponesi che costruicono piccoli capolavori di arte pescante, solo che normalmente è molto difficile mettervi sopra le mani per un occidentale come me.

Se poi andiamo a vedere il "reparto tonno" il fenomeno è ancora più accentuato; esiste tutta una serie di artificiali in balsa o altri legni leggerissimi, o addirittura in schiuma e legno assieme, realizzati così per ottenere il miglior movimento possibile in acqua tale da convincere anche il tonno più smaliziato.
La controindicazione è che si tratta di costosi "usa e getta", dato che normalmente non sopravvivono a più di un pesce... come il poverino qui sotto: 90 euro di stick solo perchè l'ho comprato direttamente ad Osaka in un momento di shopping compulsivo, altimenti, spedito e sdoganato, avrebbe sfiorato i 140-150 !!

Se nel paese di origine tale fenomeno è comprensibile anche visto l'alto valore economico del nostro "maguro", è pensabile poter trasferire da noi dei simili concetti?
Negli ultimi due anni di pesca al tonno ho avuto la fortuna di provare sifatti artificiali, e spesso sono stati gli unici a catturare in certe circostanze, con buona pace dei soliti adagi "mangiano piccolo", "sono selettivi", "vedono il terminale", ecc, ecc; quando andiamo a verificare banalmente quanto costa, a livello di carburante e spese accessorie, un'uscita di spinning in altura, direi proprio che un mercato potrebbero averlo.... ha senso andare a spendere alcune centinaia di euro ad ogni uscita senza qualche arma segreta per i momenti difficili? Sì in entrambi i casi probabilmente ma ognuno trova la risposta che gli veste meglio ;)

In soldoni, quello che si compra a caro prezzo è probabilmente l'esperienza di pesca che chi produce simili creature ha accumulato negli anni e trasformato in legno e resina.
Parliamo di esperienza pluriennale, confronti, perfezionamenti, non prove in vasca da bagno o dal moletto sottocasa; non cadiamo nel tranello di credere che perchè un artificiale è molto dettagliato nel look e costa sopra la media per forza di cose catturerà di più... è un errore madornale. Tanti, troppi giocattolini esteticamente cool non hanno alle spalle uno storico sufficente di catture e sono creati solo per acchiappare il pescatore.... i Giapponesi fortunatamente sono maestri non solo di lurebuilding ma anche di serietà, abbiamo molto da imparare da loro!

Today the market is full of lures of any kind, and that's a real problem for a collector like me; there are of every shape, color and size, bu, first of all, of any price.
If for the common italian fishermana lure that cost about 20-25 euros can be already considered over the average, for the tropical junkies spending over 100 euros on a single lure is not all that uncommon, same thing for the diehard tuna fisherman. 
But do those amounts have a reason? I don't wanna discuss about costs of the materials, the need of special finishes that stike the eye or on the matter that also cheaper lures catch their share of fishes, and good fishes.

Let's go with an example: one of the most sought after lure in the world of popping is the ultrafamous GT gamma by Carpenter, the first stickbait to strorm the international world of tropical fishermen,  even if not surely the first lure of that kind to appear in Japan.
Looking closely to such lure we see that it's a nice fishy shaped piece of wood, finished in a very appealing way, and it has a crowd of person that cannot almost think to fish without it; some models and colors can reach outstanding prices in the aftermarket.
It'n not an especially strong lure, but we must considered that every wooden stick has a short life expectance when thrown in those jaws....

In practical fishing situation it loses chips, the wire get strightened, bottom end splits often, so why should we spend 120-150-200 euros for one of them?
Answer is easy, because, when you know how to use, it catches fishes in a manner well over the average lure, it fishes more in difficult conditions and it can change the results of the day.... not things to undervalue when we think how much does it cost that trip or how much we get happy for that difficult catch.
I owe my biggest yellowfin tuna to a GT-gamma, and also a good number of memorable fishes, even when I admit that I use it a lot less than some friend of mine who almost always have one at the end of the line.

Looking well, there is a good share o small custom producer in Japan, that build small fishy masterpieces, but it's usually very hard to put our western hands on them.

If we look to the tuna world, the fenomenon is even more pronounced; there are a quantity of lures made in balsa, other soft woods or even wood and foam together, built that way to achieve the best possible action in the water so they can tease even the sharpest tuna.
The drawback is that they are usually "one bite" , because they seldom survive to more than a fish .... like the poor guy of the second picture: 90 euros of stick that I bought in Osaka during a compulsive shopping session!!

We can understand those prices to be easily payed in Japan, as we know how much it's valued the "maguro", but can we think about translating this scene in our country?
In the last two years of tuna popping, I have been lucky enough to try some high end lures, and they've been the only one to score in many circumstances; when we go to calculate how much it costs a deep sea fishing session on the base of fuel, charter and other expences, we can rapidly say they could have a market and a reason to be bought.

As a last consideration, what we buy at high price is probably the fishing experience that the builder of those jewels has accumulated over the years and that has been trasposed in wood and resin.
In most case that special lure is the result of years of testing, confrontations and development on the fishing field, not just a float test in a bathtube or a quick swim in the little harbor near home; but we don't have to get fooled thinking any lure with charming aspect and big money label is consequently good... thinking that way will lead to big mistakes. Way too many good looking toys in my country don't have the right background or a big hystorical of important catches, some are just created to catch fishermen ....luckily Japanese lure crafter are master not only with their hands but also for their seriousness, we've a lot to learn from them!

STRANI OGGETTI

Arrivati oggi da un piccolo artigiano Giapponese, veramente molto bravo e accurato! Era un po' che li cercavo per provarli e non è stato semplice e nemmeno economico procurarmeli:

20 centimetri per 90 grammi per questo ibrido darter-stickbait ..... sono ansioso di provarli, tanto sui tonni che sui pesci tropicali... vi farò sapere!

STICKBAIT... DO NOTHING

Avete mai visto danzare un GT-gamma sulla superficie manovrato da mani esperte? Bellissimo, viene voglia di attaccarlo noi stessi, esca fenomenale, cara senza dubbio, ma estremamente attirante per la sua mobilità e capacità di alzare i pesci grossi.
Eppure c'è un altro aspetto della pesca a stick al lato opposto dello spettro, un lato poco conosciuto e poco applicato da molti pescatori tropicali. Per similitudine potremmo definirlo "do nothing", un po' a riferimento di quella particolare tecnica di recupero creata alcuni decenni fa per la pesca ai black bass inattivi; in soldoni si trattava in origine di recuperare un vermino di gomma dritto, il famoso slider worm, dalle ridottissime vibrazioni in maniera lenta e senza alcun gioco di canna.
Trasportato il tutto in ambito salino e con la giusta scelta di esca, il giochino paga spesso anche nel nuovo ambiente quando l'attività è zero e i pesci sembrano inchiodati; in poche parole prendiamo il nostro stick affondante, e vedremo poi quale, lo lanciamo verso lo spot che ci piace, lasciamo affondare fino alla quota per noi ideale e iniziamo un lento recupero di mulinello a canna bassa, i pesci si incaricheranno di fare il resto.

Quali stick usare? Per restare in casa Carpenter, la mente vulcanica di Konishi-san ha creato il Pandora proprio per questo tipo di utilizzo; esca non facile da trovare sul mercato ma artefice di catture di notevole mole e che risolve situazioni intricate:

Altro? Ci sono vari stick sul mercato che si possono adattare, l'importante è che affondino e abbiano un movimento di  wobble & roll non troppo accentuato; noi ci siamo trovati bene col Volador di Mangrove Studio, con alcune misure di Bigfoot di Orion, coi surfish della Nature Boys e con alcune creazioni artigianali.

Non ci sono particolari accorgimenti di attrezzatura da adottare, anche se forse un trecciato e un terminale più sottili aiutano a mantenere una maggiore profondità di lavoro. Un consiglio che mi sento di dare è di mantenere la concentrazione, le abboccate arrivano inaspettate e talvolta molto violente, non è remoto il rischio di farsi strappare la canna di mano se ci siamo leggermente "assopiti".

Altra cosa interessante è che l'approccio sembra lavorare bene anche col tonno in situazioni di fine mangianza; molto spesso il nostro gigante non presta attenzione a stick troppo scodinzolanti, mica sempre, siamo chiari, per lasciarsi invece tentare da simulacri che vengono via dritti come un fuso e che a noi possono sembrare affatto convincenti... ma tant'è, quelli che devono abboccare sono loro, mica noi!
