I LOVE DARTERS

Un tipo di artificiale che ho sempre adorato, a partire dai datati ma sempre efficaci Yozuri Mag Darter e Ima Komomo e Sasuke, a tante altre esche meno diffuse e conosciute; penso di averci catturato l'impossibile nel corso degli anni, con però un preciso limite dato dalla costruzione senza armatura passante delle esche in plastica commerciali, con l'esclusione dei Komomo originali quando ancora prodotti in Giappone.
Altra "mancanza grave" per l'uso che ne faccio io è l'assenza di modelli di taglia seria adatti ai predatori di taglia maggiore.

It is a kind of lures that I've always loved, since introduction of the old but trusty Yozuri Mag Darter and Ima Komomo and Sasuke, not to mention a lot of lesser known ones; I've caught a bit of everything during the years, but with the limit given by the predominant lack of a strong through wire construction of commercial plastic lures, apart maybe original komomos when still built in Japan.
Other void left was concerning the size, as not big darters are available to pursue the bigger predators.

BICHITO, STORIA DI UN PENCIL

Una delle prime esche che ho costruito per fare fronte a una situazione specifica... c'era una volta, hehe, era il 1997, una spiaggia remota e non turistica in Cuba che termina verso una scogliera frastagliata; nelle acque basse della zona di confine sguazzano spesso banchi di sardine in pochi centimetri d'acqua, protette dall'acqua bassa; ma nel culmine di alta marea, pochi minuti buoni in realtà, il livello aumenta di appena il necessario per consentire ai grossi jack crevalle della zona di attaccare i pescetti foraggio, arrivando velocissimi con metà schiena fuori, quasi fossero delle piccole orche a caccia di foche.
Quello che volevo in quei frangenti era un'esca affusolata che si lanciasse molto lontano e con precisione pur con l'attrezzatura leggera con cui camminavo sulla spiaggia; veloce da lanciare ma anche veloce da lavorare.

This is one of the first lures I built to face a very specific situation... once upon a time hehe, it was 1997, there was a remote beach, in a not touristic place in Cuba, ending toward a rocky shore; in the shallows at the limit between the two environments there is usually a school of sardines swimming, protected by the few inches of water; but at the very top of high tide, the level increase just enough to allow big jack crevalles to slash into the forage with the shoulder well out of the water and almost beaching themselves, like reduced version of killer whales hunting for seals.
What I wanted for those moments was a slim aerodinamic lure that could be casted a long way with the light rod I used to bring with me on the beach, easy to fly and to retrieve in fast fashon.

Eppure non ero soddisfatto dei pencil commerciali, volevo la stessa linea filante, la stessa azione irregolare ma con l'opzione di avere più rumore; ecco quindi che nacque il Bichito nella taglia originale, corpo da 13 cm per 30 grammi, figura da pencil ma bocca da popper; cambiare da un'azione all'altra richiedeva solo alzare più o meno la canna nel recupero.

I wasn't satisfied by the pencils I could find on the market, I wanted the same profile, same erratic action but with the possibility to add more sound and commotion; that is why I carved the Bichito in the original size, body of 13 cm and weight of 30 grams, pencil shape but popper face; changing from one action to another was as simple as raising or lowering the rod. 

Uno dei pochi centri al primo colpo, a tutt'oggi lo produco nella taglia originale, ma ovviamente se ne sono aggiunte molte altre da un minimo attuale di 17 grammi ad un massimo di 160, per insidiare dalla spigola al GT, passando per serra, lampughe, snappers, jack crevalle di tutti gli oceani, emperor, coral trout, ricciole yellowtail, pesci vela... ho perso il conto di tutte le specie prese con questo artificiale.

One of the very few lucky lures to be born and satisfy me at first try; today I still build the original size, but of course many more have been aded to the array, from minimum of 17 grams to a max of 160, to target anything from seabass to GT, including bluefish, mahi, snappers, jack crevalles of every ocean, emperors, coral trouts, yellowtail kingfishes, sailfishes... I lost count of all the species I caught on this lure.

Entrando nel dettaglio si tratta di un'esca di legno, trattato e rifinito come da abitudine per affrontare ogni situazione; anche in taglia piccola non ha paura dei grandi predatori, l'armatura passante chiusa in acciaio inox Aisi 316 porta a casa qualunque preda, il limite lo fanno solo gli ami che gli mettiamo o la lenza a cui lo leghiamo.
Insomma, possiamo tranquillamente fare un GT con un'esca da serra come nella foto sotto ...

Entering in the construction, it is made with selected premium wood, treated and sealed like I usually do to withstand any situation; even in small size it doesn't fear big predators, the closed through wire made with Aisi 316 inox steel wire can bring home any fish, the limit is made only by the hooks that we mount on it or by the line we knot it to.
We can easily fish a GT with a lure meant for bluefish like in the pic below...

But obviously I suggest larger sizes for big ignobilis

Trucchi per l'uso? La fantasia... E' a suo agio a mare piatto come a mare mosso, ci si può fare WTD come recuperarlo a missile di mulinello a canna bassa per avere un tunnel di bolle molto pronunciato; a canna alta diventa un pencil popper più classico, o addirittura uno skipping lure, ma abbiamo sempre l'opzione di rallentare al volo e dare due "poppate" per quel pesce che lo sta tallonando da alcune decine di metri...

Any trick and tip? use your fantasy... It works equally well on flat sea like in teh waves, we can do WTD on or retrieve it like a missile with just reel and low rod tip to obtain an impressive bubble trail; with high rod it becomes the classic pencil or even a skipping lure, but we can always slow down the retrieve and pop hard a couple times to trigger that big one that is following from long distance.

Dove? In blue water come sul reef, come dalla scogliera o dalla spiaggia, situazione quest'ultima che l'ha visto nascere.

Where? In blue water or on the reef, from rocky shore or from the beach, this last being the situation that saw its birth.

Una piacevole curiosità, i primi esemplari che il mio amico Boris ha portato a Kerè, Guinea Bissau, posto del quale mi sarei poi innamorato pure io, fecero una così buona impressione a Laurent, proprietario e gestore del lodge, che ne volle alcuni per creare due piccole bacheche a ornamento del bar, sicuramente un piacere ed un'onore imprevisto all'epoca.

As a curious story, some of first speciment I gave to my friend Boris for a Kerè trip in Guinea Bissau, a place I later learnt to love, worked so good that Laurent, owner and founder of the lodge, wanted some for a little glass box to decorate te bar, surely an unexpected and very pleasant honour for me at that time.

Altre sfide aspettano il Bichito, per ora si è fatto valere dal Mediterraneo all'Atlantico, dalla East Coast statunitense anna Nuova Caledonia, ma non è sicuramente finita qui...

Other challenges await my Bichito for sure, up to now it has earned its success from Mediterranean to Atlantic to Pacific ocean, from US east coast to New Caledonia, but surely it all will not end here.

THE IMPORTANCE OF FIELD TESTING A LURE

Questo è un post un po' particolare, l'intenzione è far vedere come cerco di lavorare sui miei artificiali.
In particolare, essendo sempre alla ricerca di nuovi materiali e finiture, diventa fondamentale provare intensamente sul campo il nostro lavoro.

La storia è questa: avendo trovato una verniciatura particolarmente brillante e piacevolissima alla vista a esca ultimata, era necessario testarne eventuali controindicazioni in pesca pratica... niente di meglio di due settimane sul campo, una in Colombia e una alle Andamane, con tra di esse quei 20 giorni senza il minimo lavaggio o cura per l'artificiale.
Una cinquantina di catture assortite tra carangidi, mackerel, cubere, tonni, e altre specie più o meno dentate, oltre ovviamente ai vari pesci slamati, hanno costituito lo stress test ideale..

L'esca scelta per la nuova verniciatura è stata un popper da 65 grammi, molto versatile, proprio per la possibilità di attirare tante abboccate da quasi ogni razza di pinnuto predatore. Insomma il poverino ha visto l'inferno acquatico o quasi. Persino il peso in coda in acciaio cromato ha riportato segni di denti.

Alla fine del test, senza problemi strutturali di nessun tipo, ma già lo sapevo, è apparsa una criticità nell'adesione dei vari strati tra verniciature e resina, come visibile in coda e presso la girella ventrale; problema che si è presentato solo dopo molte catture, ma che è abbastanza per non introdurre la nuova finitura sulle esche commerciali fintanto che ciò non sarà risolto ( e credo che già lo sia... aspettiamo prossimo test ).

Vero che, per molti, una finitura anche molto meno resistente è totalmente accettabile, ma qui si preferisce lavorare diverso e non fare pagare bei soldini per qualcosa che poi si disgrega in mare... comunque la soluzione è già in vista :)
E' in pratica sempre il pesce alla fine a decretare il successo, quindi, per questo portiamo sempre in mare i nostri giochini prima che sullo shop :) Spero che sia apprezzato :)

This is an unusual post, the goal is to show how I like to work on my custom lures.
Being always on the search for new materials and finishes, it is mandatory to try them accurately on the field.
Short story is as follows: as I found a very special paint with highly reflective power and very pleasant to the eyesight, it surfaced the need to search for any drawback on practical fishing... no better test than a week in Colombia followed by 20 days of inactivity with no rinse or wathever care for the lure followed by another week in Andaman.
I caught about 50 fishes on this lure, with jacks, mackerels, cuberas, tunas and more, not mentioning of all the missed strikes and lost fishes, by my opinion the perfect stress test.
Chosen lure was a 65 grams popper, very versatile model that could attract any kind of predator. the poor piece of wood saw hell in water. even stainless steel tail weight has reported toothmarks.
At the end of the testing, without any structural problem, it appeared a issue in the adhesion of different layers of paint and resin, as can be seen near the tail ( where you can also see the thickness of the protective layers ) and the belly swivel; this problem appeared only after many catches and can be considered absolutely statistically acceptable, , but in my opinion it is enough to call for further improvements before hitting the shop ( already under development ).
Well, somebodyelse would consider more fragile finishes totally acceptable, but we try to maximize the strenght of our lures for the happiness of the fisherman, rather than make people pay big euros for something that melts down when touched by a fish :D
It doesn't matter how sexy can be a lure, it is always the fish to determine its success... so, this is why we always bring our lures for a bath before than in the shop ;) Hope it will be appreciated :)

LANCILLO ON THE PACIFIC

E' stato un piacere portare il mio Lancillo in Colombia, peccato mi siano stati sequestrati dai compagni di viaggio...
Nonostante la taglia piccolina per quello che mi aspettavo da questo mare ha catturato un po' di tutto, dagli yellowfin ai jack crevalle e mackerels, fino ad alcune cubere, la ultima troppo grande che me l'ha strappato via :(
Secondo la guida l'efficacia particolare era dovuta alla somiglianza col foraggio allungato in loco.
Prossimo giro Andamane :)

A pleasure to bring "lancillo" to pacific Columbia, too bad they've been kidnapped by my fishing friends...
Even with relatively small size respect what I was expecting, it raised a bit of everything, from yft to jack crevalle and mackerels, to some cuberas, last one too big for the PE5 tackle.
According to the guide, its effectiveness was due to perfect match to local baitfish.
Next trip for my little lure will be Andamans.

New toy, yet to name..

AYNO BIG ....

Ok, time to grow big for the Ayno.... inspiration have been what is already on market, speciphically the Native Works Napalm lure that I first discovered three years ago...here
While I still love the original, I wanted a different movement in my lure, same I have found for smaller Ayno prototype... I want a more wobbling and less rolling retrieve, not "S" shaped trajectory like stickbaits and like Napalm, but a more wobbling action, kind of a minnow with a popping face suited also for slow retrieves...  Ima sasuke and komomoII have given me some input too..... but from these 3 starting points i redisigned completely the weight position to tailor the action to my desired result....

I also made head angle less sharp than smaller Ayno, otherwise swimming depth would be too much...

This is meant to be a big fish lure, to be popped and swam under the surface... 2 mm through wire and 21.5 mm... wooden prototype but will be produced in resin if up to the expectation... testing will go on quickly I hope... I want it ready and reliable for April big fish trip in the Pacific ....

Momento di crescita per l'Ayno.... l'ispirazione è venuta da quanto già sul mercato, nello specifico il Napalm della Native Works, che ho scoperto per la prima volta tre anni fa.. qui
Nonostante mi piaccia molto l'originale, volevo un movimento differente, lo stesso che produce il prototipo dell'Ayno piccino da 10 cm.... volevo un maggiore wobbling e non una traiettoria a "S" come uno stickbait, tipo un minnow con il muso da popper, adatto anche a recuperi più lenti...
Anche il sasuke della Ima e il komomoII mi hanno dato qualche input, ma da questi tre punti di inizio ho ridisegnato completamente la posizione delle zavorre per arrivare all'azione che desideravo.

Ho anche reso l'angolo della bocca più verticale rispetto all'Ayno più piccolo, per non avere una profondità di nuoto eccessiva..

E' un'esca destinata a igrossi pesci tipo cubere, tonni e GT, che poppera a galla e nuota sotto la superficie... armatura continua da 2 mm e 21.5 cm di lunghezza.. il peso lo vedremo, ma sarà realizzato in resina se il prototipo di legno soddisferà tutte le richieste.
I test dovrebbero essere rapidi, ho le idee piuttosto chiare e lo voglio pronto per il nostro viaggio di Aprile nel Pacifico...

NUOVI LURES IN RESINA - TESTING REPORTS

Da circa una anno e mezzo sto seguendo il progetto di alcuni piccoli artificiali in resina, anzichè il solito legno; nascono dalla necessità, riscontrata direttamente in pesca, di avere esche contenute nelle dimensioni ma assolutamente a prova di pesce grosso o enorme, un'esca da spigole nelle proporzioni ma capace di non cedere sotto le pressioni della pesca tropicale; troppe volte ho avuto esche di fabbrica spezzate o private dell'armatura da pesci un po' troppo cresciutelli per il loro target.

I've been for one year and half after the project of some small resin lures instead of usual wood: they are born by the field call of a presentation of diminutive dimensions but still capable of landing very big and strong fishes, practically seabass lures in proportions but able to withstand hard tropical and pelagic fishing... too many times I saw factroy lures broken or stripped of the wire by too big fishes.

Pescare nelle mangrovie o sul reef può alle volte richiedere un'esca piccola, ma le sollecitazioni di un grosso snook o barramundi o cubera o altro possono mandare in pezzi un minnow da scaffale; stesso discorso per la pesca ai pelagici, quando grossi tonni e simili si cibano selettivamente su foraggio piccino.

Servono quindi in pratica poche mirate caratteristiche che sono quelle che ho ricercato nello sviluppo dei lures che vi presento poi:
- Una sagoma robusta e compatta
- Un'armatura passante chiusa a prova di trazioni e torsioni anche per attrezzi da 80 libbre e più
- Capacità di sostenere ami e ancorette molto robusti sia pure in taglie ridotte.

Fishing among the mangroves or above the reef might demand sometimes a small lure, but the power of a big snook or barramundi or cubera or something else can destroy out of shelf minnows and topwaters; same thing for bluewater when big tunas and friends feed selectively on small forage.

So we need few on target carachteristics that I searched for while projecting these new creatures:
- a strong and compact shape
- a closed through wire that can withstand torsion and pull on 80 lbs tackle or more,
- the ability to be dressed with very strong hooks even if in reduced sizes

I tre primi modelli delle cui capacità pescanti sono soddisfatto sono i seguenti:

Here are the first three models I am satisfied about:

- uno stick affondante da 12.5 cm per 50 e 60 grammi ( due pesi ), battezzato "Woomera", ovvero come un'antica arma aborigena da lancio, da un amico australiano per le capacità di gittata eccezionali; dopotutto nasce da mangianza anche se si batte benissimo pure dalla costa e per i pesci delle acque costiere; affondamento orizzontale e grande stabilità alle jerkate aggressive, con un accentuato scodinzolio.

a sinking stickbait in 12.5 cm with two different weights of 50 and 60 grams;  an Australian friend bapthized it "Woomera", like an nacient aborigenal weapon due to its great casting ability; even if born for offshore fishing above frenzies it works perfectly weel inshore, sinks horizontally and shows great stability to even nervous jerking, with ample tail throbbing.

- il "Lancillo", un ibrido jerk minnow senza paletta-stickbait affondante orizzontale da 18 cm per 35 e 50 grammi, nato come primo prototipo circa dieci anni fa ma ripreso di recente, sia per il classico approccio per i barra nostrani che per ogni situazione in cui i predatori cercano aguglie, ballyhoo o comunque foraggio di forma allungata.

this is "Lancillo", a hybrid between a lipless long jerk and a sinking stick, 18 cm in two weights of 35 and 50 grams, horizontal sinking again; was first born about ten years ago for classic mediterranean barracuda fishing but taken out of dust recently to prove itself with any kind of predators when they want slim forage like garfish and needlefish and so on.

- l' "Ayno", che ho chiamato così per tutte le volte in cui ho dovuto rifare il prototipo perchè non pienamente soddisfatto e in cui ho esclamato "Ahi, no!" ( o anche peggio :D ); un popper-darter, galleggia, poppera sullo strappo, per poi scendere sotto la superficie con un ampio movimento di wobbling e rolling quasi da minnow; 10.5 cm per 22 grammi

and "Ayno", so called for so many "Ahi, no!" for any times I had to redue and modify it :D; it is a floating darter/popper, it pops on the beginning of retrieve and then swims with ambple wobbling and rolling like a minnow lure; 10.5 cm for 22 grams.

Se il Woomera e il Lancillo sono praticamente promossi, l'Ayno mantiene fede all'ispirazione del nome... lavora bene come volevo, si lancia ottimamente, piglia anche parecchi pesci ma ha un punto debole insito nel materiale stesso: la parte inferiore della bocca si è consumata rapidamente toccando le rocce dure delle Bijagos, non che col legno sarebbe differente, e magari non sarebbe un problema per pescare sotto alle mangrovie come da idea originale, ma volendo un'esca universale e robusta dovrò trovare una soluzione al problemino... a presto Ayno 3.0

I am satisfied by Woomera and Lancillo but Ayno keeps faith to the origin of name... it works well as I wanted, casts very well, catch a lot of fishes, but it showed a weak point in lower part of bill that get easily worn with prolongued contacts of rocks and coral; with wood it would be same and it wouldn't be a problem fishing under the mangroves for example as by original plan, but i want a lure that can be used everywhere and i must find a solution ( something already buzzing in my head ) ... soon will be Ayno 3.0

ANDAMAN, SEA OF GIANTS ....

Un titolo un po' evocativo per il report del nostro viaggio di Maggio scorso; il periodo lo abbiamo scelto con cura, appena prima dell'arrivo del monsone e nel momento d'oro del passo dei tonni yellowfin, e la scelta ci ha dato ragione su tutti i fronti.

Il primo giorno e parte del terzo li abbiamo dedicati ai tonni, run and gun veloce seguendo i delfini, sotto di loro grossi branchi di yellowfin in caccia mischiati a qualche skipjack... è apparso anche il marlin che pinneggiava a galla in tranquillità, ma non ha degnato di uno sguardo il mio stick.
La taglia non era eccessiva, pesci dai 10 ai 25 kg, ma in quantità pressochè illimitata, onestamente ho perso il conto sopra quota venti per me, mentre i ragazzi si sono arresi prima... diciamo che era la speranza del big, che non è arrivato, a muovermi, dopo un certo punto, in zona c'erano pesci da 70 kg; ho pure slamato un lampugone di grossa taglia su un Dorado da 80 grammi, di quelli che vengono in modo spettacolare nelle foto, ahimè... peccato :)

An emotional title for the report of last May trip; we chosed the period just before monsoon arriving and in the peack of yft migration, and homeworks scored big under every aspects.

First and part of third day were dedicated to tuna chasing, a fast run and gun game following the dolphins; under them big pods of yellowfins and skipjacks ... I also had the cahnce to cast to a surface finning marlin, but he didn't like my stick.
Size was not big, mostly fishes between 10 and 25 kilos, but in unlimited quantity, honestly I lost count over 20, while other guys stopped way before... what kept me moving was the research of the big one that unfortunately didn't arrive, 70 kilos fishes were present in the zone; I also pulled the hook on a big mahi that attacked an 80 grams Alle's Lures Dorado cast near a  floating wood branch, could have made some spectacular pictures... too bad hehe :)

 

Come esche praticamente di tutto nelle giuste taglie, anche se gli stick affondanti hanno mietuto più vittime per la possibilità di lanciarli più lontano.... bastava che cadessero in acqua spesso, e il pesce ti strappava la canna di mano; spettacolari anche gli attacchi sui poppers.

As lures, almost everything worked in the right size with a preference for sinking stickbaits, due to the possibility to cast them farther... they were usually violently attacked in the moment they hitted the water or in the short moment when retrieving the slack line due to the wind... strong bites that almost pulled rod from hands; also the strikes on poppers were amazing.

 

 

Ma il nostro target principale erano i grossi carangidi per cui quest'area è famosa, un po' viziati dalla elevata temperatura dell'acqua di fine stagione, ma che ci hanno fatto visita in taglie veramente interessanti.
Per muoverli sono serviti grossi artificiali, poppers dai 130 ai 170 grammi lavorati piano, stickbait dai 160 ai 200 grammi lavorati piano anche loro e anche un pencil come il bichito da 130 grammi col quale Giovanni ha ottenuto alcune stupende catture. In poche occasioni nelle baie riparate hanno funzionato anche artificiali più umani.

Our main target were big GTs that make this place wellknown, they were a little lazy due to the high water tempearature of end of the season, but we were rewarded by several outstanding catches.
To move them we used big lures, poppers between 130 and 170 grams moved slowly, stickbaits in the 160-220 grams range retrieved in very lazy way and also a pencil like Bichito 130 grams in the calmest bays gave some spectacular fishes to my friend Giovanni. In few occasions in calm waters also some normal size lures worked well.

Anche a jigging ci si diverte come scimmie, specialmente con attrezzi leggeri anche PE3 ...

Also jigging is rewarding with a lot of fishes on PE3-4 class but also on bigger tackle..

Qualche mostriciattolo anche a vertical.... Il big GT del capitano sul PE3 ( devo smettere di fare provare le mie canne hahaha ) ... e un caro silver tip di taglia media..

A proposito di squali... qui si è fatto vivo il tigre, buchi dei denti da 4 cm... indovinate la taglia!

E quando fa caldo caldo la soluzione è una sola....

 

And when the heat is extreme there's just one solution....

 

Potrei andare avanti con altre catture ma diciamo che credo che basti, l'esperienza è stata fantastica e le Andamane non hanno deluso, anzi, un paradiso per la pesca! L'anno prossimo abbiamo programmato una battuta estrema, c'è un banco a 50 miglia che risale fino in superficie quasi da oltre 2000 metri di fondo.... ma questa sarà un'altra avventura, si cercano jiggatori folli e popperatori feroci :D :D

I could go on with a lot more catches but I think it's enough, the experience has been fantastic and Andamans were up to their fame, a fishing paradise! For next year we're planning an extreme adventure, there's a bank 50 miles offshore that raises almost to the top from a bottom of 2000 meters... but that will be another story, we're looking for crazy jiggers and wild poppers :D :D
