COLOMBIA BAHIA SOLANO GENNAIO 2018

Un viaggio forse un po' precoce dato che quella che chiamano estate qui ancora non si vedeva e il cambio d'acqua non era avvenuto... abbiamo faticato un po' più del previsto ma i risultati non sono mancati.

A trip a bit too early in season maybe as local "summer" was late and the change of blue water hadn't happened yet.... fishing was not so fast and furious as we like but we got nice results anyway.

PEACOCKS OF MATAVEN

Dopo aver pescato in lungo e in largo per il pianeta non poteva mancare un'avventura a peacock bass, teatro di questo nostro viaggio è stato il rio Mataven, affluente dell'Orinoco nella selva Colombiana.
Il viaggio è stato lunghetto, Bologna-Madrid-Bogotà, notte nella capitale, volo interno su Puerto Inirida, serata in un piccolo ma ottimo resort e l'indomani alcune ore di navigazione, prima sul grande fiume con barca rapida e poi sul nostro rio con le barche dei locali, indios di etnia Piaroa che detengono tutti i diritti di pesca del Mataven e lo amministrano con grande oculatezza e attenzione per la salvaguardia di un'importantissima risorsa turistica: pochi gruppi sono permessi ogni anno, il C&R è totale e vige l'obbligo di ami singoli per tutelare al massimo il pesce.
Va da se che il popolamento di queste acque è pauroso, sia come taglie che come quantità, pesci da 20 libbre sono comuni e catturati praticamente tutti i giorni; tre specie di "Chicla"sono presenti, il grande temensis, l'onnipresente butterfly e il caratteristico orinocensis; se il primo è facilmente distinguibile, confesso di avere fatto una certa confusione tra le altre due specie, piuttosto simili nella loro variabilità.
La location dove alloggiamo è spettacolare, un campo tendato confortevolissimo su una spiaggia incantevole, nulla è lasciato al caso, docce, bagno, tende comuni per cenare, elettricità che non manca mai e una crew assolutamente attenta e preparata... la birra fesca non è mai un problema.

Having fished well around the world, I couldnìt miss the chance to target Peacock Bass, and this time we went on the Mataven river, an Orinoco tributary in teh Colombian jungle.
The trip has been long, bologna-madrid-Bogotà, a night in the capital and then fly again to Puerto Inirida, another night in a very nice resort and the day after some hours of navigation, first on a fast boat on the big river and then on the skiff of the local guides, belonging to the loca tribe of Piaroa Indios who own the fishing rights on the Mataven and administer it all with great respect to a great touristic resource: few groups of fishermen are allowed every year, total C&R is the policy and single hooks instead of trebles are mandatory to avoid damaging the fishes.
That said, the fish population in this water is astonishing, both in numbers and sizes, 20 pounder are common and caught basically every day: there are three "Chicla" species, the big temensis, the everpresent butterfly and the carachteristic orinocensis; if the first specie is easily to recognize, I made a bit of confusion on the two lesser species as they look quite similar to my untrained eyes.
Lodgement location is a spectacular tent camp on a sandy beach, everything is well projected and kept, with showers, bathroom, common spaces to dine and electricity in every monet to aliment, fans, fridges and so on.. cold beer is never a problem.

PROGRAMMA COLOMBIA GENNAIO 2018 PEACOCK BASS E SALTWATER

Tempo di pianificare, a gennaio si va in Colombia di nuovo, ormai è quasi una seconda casa...

-Prima settimana dal 5 al 14 sul rio Mataven a pescare alcuni dei peacock bass più grandi in giro

-Seconda settimana dal 15 al 21 a Bahia Solano, alla ricerca dei "soliti" cuberoni, ricciole, jack, tonni e compagnia, con un occhio particolare per tarpon e snook questa volta magari.


Time to plan some trips, January we go again in Colombia, it is becoming almost a new home ..

Fisrt week 5th-12nd on Mataven River, searching for some of the biggest Peacock Bass around  

Second week 13rd-21st in Bahia Solano, fishing for "usual" cuberas, amberjacks, tunas, jacks and so on, with a special eye for snook and tarpon this time.

COLOMBIA REPORT - BAHIA SOLANO

Un mesetto fa sono rientrato dalla Colombia, dopo essere stato a pesca con due distinti gruppi di amici.
Le condizioni non sono state delle più facili vista l'imprevedibilità del meteo e la migrazione a singhiozzo delle sardine che ha causato momenti di frenesia alternati ad apatia... ma direi che il bilancio è come sempre positivo.
Mancate un po' le cubere, sono state soprattutto le ricciole almaco a movimentare la situazione, oltre al solito miscuglio di pesci costieri e pelagici.
Highlight del trip un marlin nero da 350 libbre che mi ha impegnato per 20 minuti sulla canna da vertical per poi slamarsi in uno spettacolare salto...

One month ago I came back from Colombia after fishing with two different groups of friends.
Fishing conditions were not easy due to unpredictable weather and the intermitting sardine run that created frenzy moments alternated to flat dead calm others; anyway balance is more than positive.
We missed the big cuberas, but we especially enjoyed the almaco jacks activity and the usual mix of coastal and pelagic fishes.
Hightlight of the trip for me was the fight with an extimated 350 lbs black marlin that kept me sweating for 20 minutes on jigging tackle, before throwing the hook in a spectacular jump...

GALAHAD 73/4 LONG FALL JIG ROD BY YAMAGA BLANKS: PART TWO, SECOND TRY

A dicembre scorso avevo pubblicato le prime impressioni su questa canna particolare in questo post , dopo l'esperienza maturata in Guinea Bissau, e mi ero ripromesso di continuare le prove in altri scenari e con altri approcci verticali, dopo la gomma e inchiku/kabura delle prime pescate; occasione trovata in Colombia lo scorso maggio. 

Questa volta ho provato a pescare nel più classico vertical jigging, sia pure in forma leggera viste le condizioni ambientali.

Esche usate metal jigs da 60 a 120 grammi, lavorati principalmente a short jerk.

Le prede non sono mancate, sotto forma di Almaco Jack di buona mole, specie considerando il PE3 in bobina, e qualche pesce minore come snappers e cernie di taglia modesta.

Past december I published my first impressions on this very peculiar rod in another post , soon after the experience I matured in Guinea Bissau, and I promised to myself to try it again in other places and with other fishing approaches, after the softies on jighead and inchiku/kabura of first tries; right occasion happened in Colombia in May.

This time I tried to fish with normal vertical jigging technique, even if in relatively light form due to environmental conditions. I used mostly jigs between 60 to 120 grams in short jerk.

I caught a good number of fishes, mostly almaco jacks of good size, especially considering the PE3 in the reel, and some minor species of snappers and groupers.

L'attrezzo si è trovato perfettamente a suo agio anche con questa presentazione, abbinato con uno Shimano Ocea Jigger 1501HG, mulinello veloce quindi, in particolare l'anellatura montata a spirale ci ha protetto da possibili volte di filo attorno al cimino. Il controllo in combattimento è stato ottimo, anche se ovviamente le tempistiche sono aumentate rispetto agli amici col PE5 con cui condividevo la barca; ottimo backbone per questa classe di filo senza dubbio.

The rod was perfect even with this presentation, paired with a Shimano Ocea jigger 1501HG, a fast reel, spiral montage was especially useful not to have coils of line wrapping on the tip section. Fish control during fisht was very good thanks to the nice backbone for this class of line, even if time was obviously longer than my friends using PE5.
