Ovvero alla ricerca del giant snakehead.
3 giorni spesi in un ambiente mozzafiato in quel di Rompin, pescando sotto il sole cocente e sotto le nubi del temporale.

Searching for giant snakehead.
Three days spent near Rompin in a spectacular environment, fishing under heavy sun or dark clouds.

Peccato sono mancate le catture, solo due "baby" si sono fatti fotografare.... oltre a un paio di pesci slamati.... un po' troppo poco.

Too bad we had no serious catches, just a couple babies and couple lost fishes .... not enough sadly.

La ragione probabile? Troppi filaccioni dei professionisti, un amo ogni angolo del lago, stupisce poco l'assenza di catture importanti; peccato, potrebbe essere un paradiso ma così non ne vale la pena... cercheremo un altra destinazione per questo bellissimo pesce.

Possible reason? Too many set lines by commercial fishermen, a hook in every corner of the lake, no wonder the absence of notable catches; it is a pity cause this place could be a fishing paradise, but in this situation it is not worth the trip.... we'll look for another destination for this fantastic fish in future.

A LURE I LIKE : IMAKATSU IK 50

E' un piccolo crankbait shallow diver ( 5.5 cm per 10 grammi ) che ho imparato ad apprezzare negli anni...

L'incontro non è avvenuto in negozio, fiera o ebay, ma in maniera piuttosto insolita, l'ho infatti rinvenuto in fondo alla bocca di un grosso siluro che aveva abboccato al mio altro crank, un goloso insomma.

La foto è un po' cruenta ma è proprio il momento del "ritrovamento"

This is a small ( 5.5 cm and 10 grams ) shallow diving crankbait that I learnt to love during the years.

I first found it not in a tackle shop or expo or ebay, but deep in the throat of a good wels catfish I caught.. there, beside my lure, was embetted that little thing... picture is a bit splatter but it is the exact one of the moment.

Già quella fu una testimonianza di efficacia, incredibile che un'esca tanto piccola possa attirare un tale bestione, anche considerando l'assenza di rattler.

Da allora, nelle tre versioni IK 50 C ( coffin ), IK 50 R ( round ) e IK 50 S ( square ), mi ha seguito in giro per il mondo ogni volta che ho affrontato posti d'acqua dolce, dalle acque casalinghe per i classici bass alla Malesia con Snakehead e Sebarau, alla Guinea Bissau con tilapie e African Pike

Since that time, in three versions, IK 50 C ( coffin ), IK 50 R ( round ) e IK 50 S ( square ), it followed me around the world anytime I went on freshwater trips, from home waters for bass to Malaysia for Snakeheads and Sebarau, to Guinea Bissau for Tilapias and African Pikes.

Le lettere dopo il numero si riferiscono alla forma della paletta, ognuna con un'azione leggermente diversa... la versione C in particolare, che si intravede appena uscire dalla bocca del Sebarau, è ottima per districarsi tra rami e rocce deflettendo all'impatto e risultando abbastanza immune da incagli, mentre la R, sotto con la tilapia, è più adatta per acque libere per recuperi più veloci.

Different letters indicate different bill shape with slightly different action... C version, the one slighlty protruding from Sebarau mouth, it is especially effective in bumpiing wood and rock and pivoting free, being as snagproof as a crankbait can be, while the R in the tilapia mouth is perfect for open water and slightly faster retrieves.

Quello che mi da confidenza in questi crank è la particolare robustezza delle plastiche, pur non avendo armatura passante, Le esche Imakatsu mi hanno sempre positivamente sorpreso per quello che riescono a sopportare ove altre vengono mutilate.

The reason I trust this IK is the strenght of the plastic, even without a through wire construction. Imakatsu lures have always surprised me due to what they can withstand when other brands get often broken.

E in più, ragione per cui mi piace particolarmente, la capacità di prendere pesce, tanto pesce... peccato davvero non esista una versione più grande in questa versione shallow.

And of course , the main reason to use it is that it catches fishes, lots of fishes... too bad there isn't a larger version in the shallow model.

TOMAN OF TAMENGGOR

Un veloce fotoreport di un piacevole viaggio in Malesia alla ricerca del Toman, ovvero del Giant Snakehead, un pesce particolare tanto nelle abitudini che nell'aspetto che nella pesca.
Ho avuto il piacere di affiancare pescatori locali e di provare in anteprima alcuni prototipi e alcni modelli in prossima uscita della Yamaga Blanks, tanta roba devo dire!

A quick photoreport of a pleasant trip to Malaysia in search of the Toman, aka Giant Snakehead, a very singular fish in shape, habits and fishing tactics.
I've had the pleasure to join some local fishermen ant to try some prototypes and some rods of next presentations by Yamaga Blanks, fantastic new tools!

Il posto è il lake Tamenggor a tre ore circa di macchina dall'aeroporto di Penang, un lago artificiale creato da una diga circa quarantanni fa e che ha inondato una parte della fittissima jungla malesiana, ancora regno di tigri, elefanti e altra fauna esotica.

The location is Lake Tamenggor, distant about three hours of car from the Penang airport; it's a reservoir born by a dam created more than 40 years ago; the waters have inundated part of the nearby jungle, that now is still refuge of tigers, elephants and other exotic species.

Unico problema gli alti livelli trovati che hanno spinto la maggior parte dei pesci ben addentro la vegetazione e nel profondo dei meandri più ristretti.

Only problem was the high level of waters that pushed most of the fishes well inside the cover and in the deep end of the smallest creeks

E' stata pesca difficile con poche e sofferte catture per lo più a spinnerbait, centinaia di lanci precisi a filo ostacolo e ogni tanto l'attacco di una ferocia che ti coglie impreparato, a volte ti raddrizza addirittura l'amo, ma a volte ci restano, anche se dopo quasi ogni pesce l'artificiale è da buttare...

Hard fishing with few and suffered catches, most of them on a spinnerbait; hundreds of sharp casts and pitches to the obstacles and sometimes we're surprised by a ferocious strike that can even straighten a hook, but on several occasion we're lucky to hook well the fish, even if after almost any catch the spinner it's ready to be thrown away.

The Tackle:

Gli altri pesci, dall'harauan o snakehead striato al "jungle perch", in realtà non un persico ma un ciprinide superaggressivo e dal combattimento feroce...

Among other species the harauan, striped snakehead, and the jungle perch, not really a perch but a fish of the carp family, very aggressive and strong fighter...

E dopo tanti sforzi finalmente un bel pesce topwater, su un buzzbait della Shell Shaping Lures, mangiata detonante degna di un Gt, che dovrebbe essere la norma in condizioni più ideali...

After a lot of efforts finally a nice fish on topwater with a Shell Shaping Lures buzzer; a vicious strike like a GT one, that should be the norm in more ideal conditions...

Diciamo che per questa volta hanno vinto loro, nel senso che è mancato il pesce grande, anche se l'esperienza è stata memorabile.... tornerò sicuramente in questa parte di mondo alla caccia di questo fantastico predatore, Malesia, Thailandia, India, chissà ... intanto stiamo pensando di tornare a settembre in un'altra location malesiana... a chi interessasse non resta che mandarmi una mail :D

This time they won the battle, in the meaning that I didn't succeed in catching a truly big one, but the experience had been memorable... I'll go there again in that fashinating part of the world for sure, to hunt for this fantastic predator, Malaysia, Thailand, India, who know.... we're now thinking about going to another malaysian destination in september... if anybody is interested just send me an email :D
