THE NORTH SUDAN REPORT

E' passata una mesata abbondante dal rientro da questo viaggio, ma il tempo è stato tiranno e il lavoro l'ha fatta da padrone. Ho comunque trovato il tempo di preparare una selezione di foto del nostro viaggio esplorativo nella parte nord delle acque sudanesi, sempre con lo Scuba Libre.
Il tempo è stato ottimo, dopo un paio di giorni di leggero mare mosso si è definitivamente calmato, e i pesci hanno collaborato alla grande soprattutto a galla.

More than a month has passed since we come back from this trip, but shortage of time due to our job has ruled the things. I finally found some spare time to prepare a small selection of pictures of our exploratory trip to the North part of sudanese waters, again with Scuba Libre.
Weather has been good, with just a couple days of moderately rough sea, and fishes have cooperated a lot, especially in topwater popping.

I GT sono stati le catture più abbondanti, con parecchi pesci anche di buona taglia e una media superiore al precedente viaggio in Mar Rosso:

GT have been the most abundant catches, with many fishes of good size and a higher average than last year trip in the  Red Sea:

 

Oltre ai cari carangidi tante altre specie ci hanno fatt ocompagnia, barra, cernie, coral trout, bluefin trevallies e gli abbondantissimi red snappers.

Not only GTs, but also many other species like barracudas, groupers, coral trouts, bluefin trevallies and the over abundant red snappers.

Ci siamo dedicati veramente poco al jigging, ma una soddisfazione me la sono cavata:

SHORE JIGGING, LE CANNE ... RIPPLE FISHER RUNNER EXCEED

Da buon "antiquato" tropicalista le occasioni di pesca importante dalla riva non sono mai state molte, e, pur essendomi in passato cimentato saltuariamente da scogliere e spiagge, l'ho sempre fatto con convenzionali attrezzi da spinning. Nel processo ho anche fatto belle catture, barracuda, snappers, carangidi, financo un tarpon da una quarantina di chili preso da una scogliera alta in quel di Cuba.
Così è stato anche l'anno scorso in Sudan, camminando fino al bordo del dropoff in un metro d'acqua o poco più, e lanciando con una classica "lunga" da GT, nella fattispecie una Fantastick GT82LC, ottima canna, versatile, ma un po' fuori dal suo nella pesca specifica.
Infatti ricordo clamorose slamate, ferrate mancate e alcuni pesciotti discreti a carniere, ma anche ricordo la persistente sensazione dell'occasione persa e di avere solo scalfito un mondo diverso.

As a good old tropical fisherman, I never had many occasions for heavy shore fishing; I've seldom tryed in the past to fish with heavy tackle from rocky shores and sandy beaches, but always with the usual spinning tackle I used on the boat. In the while I also made some good catches, barracudas, snappers, jacks and even a 40 kilos tarpon caught from a high bluff in Cuba.
In Sudan last year I used the same approach, walking to the edge of the reef in waist deep water and casting with a classic "long" popping outfit, it was a Fantastick GT82LC, very nice rod, versatile, but a little out of the track in that speciphic situation.
I remember a lot of oulled hooks, missed strikes and some less than average fishes caught, but I also remember the persistent feel to have lost an occasion and only scratched the surface of a different world.

Poi è capitato di ordinare alcuni attrezzi particolari da "shore jigging" per alcuni clienti del mio shoponline, nella fattispecie le Blue Sniper della Yamaga Blanks e le Runner Exceed della Ripple Fisher, attrezzi molto particolari, leggeri, ma allo stesso tempo lunghi e in grado di manovrare una grande varietà di artificiali , soprattutto capaci di trasmettere signore ferrate a grande distanza e profondità grazie alla leva lunga e potente.
Sono attrezzi nati per controllare prede di taglia da posizioni scomode, potenti ma allo stesso tempo gestibili, insomma tanto mi sono piaciuti che mi sono pigliato una cannetta anche per me; la mia scelta è ricaduta sulla Runner Exceed 97EH, 150 grammi di esche lanciabili (jig) e, ad occhio un 90-100 grammi di stickbait manovrabili, 60 libbre di potenza, più che sufficenti, almeno nelle intenzioni, per litigare con qualche discreto dogtooth o GT dal bordo del reef.

It has happened several times to order dedicated "shore jigging" rods for some customer of my shop online, mainly Yamaga Blanks Blue Sniper or Ripple Fisher Runner Exceed; these rods are light and at the same time quite long, capable to move a great variety of lures and, overall, to set the hook sharply even at great distance and depth, due to the long and powerful leverage.
They're thought to control big fishes from difficult positions, powerful but easy to handle at the same time... so much I liked them that I had to buy one for myself; my choice has been on the Runner Exceed 97EH, 150 grams of lure weight ( jigs ), that let me think it can be used with 90-100 grams stickbaits, 60 pounds of power, more than enough in the intentions to discuss with some nice dogtooth or GT from the edge of the reef.

Naturalmente il catalogo Ripple offre molto altro, dalla RE-911EMH, adatta per il Mediterraneo e la ricerca di dentici, lecce o chissà ricciole da posti come le scogliere impervie o gli antemurali dei porti, alle nuovissime e "coming soon" RE-FINAL STAND UP, classificate fino a PE10 e degne dei moli di Tokara o delle scogliere di Socotra.... chi ne volesse provare una faccia un fischio!

The Ripple Fisher catalog of course offers a lot ampler choice, starting with the RE-911EMH, perfect for the Mediterranean Sea to hunt for big dentex, leerfish and maybe amberjack in places like sttep rocky shores or long jetties, to go to the new "coming soon" RE-FINAL STAND UP, rated to PE10 and worth to be used from the piers of Tokara or the points of Socotra.... if anyone would try one, just contact me!

REPORT: GUINEA BISSAU - ILE KERE'

Rieccoci di ritorno dal nostro ultimo viaggio in Guinea Bissau: il posto è sempre fantastico, l'accoglienza ottima, la pesca molto varia e, nonostante il vento sfavorevole che intorbidiva le acque, abbiamo effettuato molte valide catture sia in light jigging che topwater.

We're back from our latest trip in Guinea Bissau: place is always wonderful, hosting perfect, fishing is quite various and, in spite of a uncommon bad wind that put the water dirty, we caught a lot of fishes in light jigging and topwater.

 

 

A jigging con kabura, inchiku e soft plastic, su fondali da 7 a 30 metri, l'hanno fatta da padrone le otoliti, con best one di 12 kg per me ma che scompariva di fronte a una di oltre 16 kg di alcuni amici francesi; a contorno alcuni bei jack crevalle ma ancora mi manca l'incontro col "capitain", ovvero il west african threadfin, anche se proprio il giorno prima del nostro arrivo ne era uscito uno di over 10 kg... molto buono a tavola devo dire.

We jigged with kaburas, inchikus and soft plastics on depths between 7 and 30 meters; main quarry where the otholites with a best for me of 12 kilos, big fish but still a puppy compared to an over 16 of some french friends; beside them we foud nice jack crevalle but I still miss the encounter with the "capitain" aka west african threadfin,,, just the day before our arrive a 10 kilos specimen had been cauhgt... very good on the dish.

Sempre dalla barca ottimo lo spinning topwater, con bei carangidi, sia jack crevalle che fishery, questi ultimi più compatti e tipici dell'Africa occidentale; oltre a loro qualche snapper e dei bei barracuda quando non tagliavano il terminale.

Again from the boat we had good catches on topwaters, mainly jack creavalles and fishery, a specie typical of West Africa, also some snapper and some nice barracuda, when the didn't manage to cut the nylon leader.

 

I ragazzi francesi, che si sono dedicati anche alla traina hanno catturato esemplari di barracuda "afra" veramente notevoli, come questo di 25 kg pesati.

Ma la parte più bella di questo viaggio è stata la pesca da terra, sia in locations remote come l'isola di Formosa, sia proprio dall'isolotto di Kerè; è praticamente possibile usciere dal bungalow, fare pochi passi ed agganciare una miriade di ladyfish e pesci minori, ma al giusto momento non mancheranno i grandi predatori come carangidi, mackerel, snappers e gli onnipresenti barra.

Best part of this trip has been shore fishing, in some remote locations like the Formosa island, or even from the same Kerè island; it's possible just to walk the beach down the bungalow and start fishing for a herd of ladyfishes and other small ones, but when the right moment big predators will show themselves in the shape of big jacks, mackerel, snappers and the ubiquitous Guinean Barra.

Abbiamo anche pescato fuori dalle nostre convenzioni, con attrezzatura da light game, nella fattispecie una Yamaga Blanks Blue Current 78 con potenza 1-12 grammi ... gli attacchi erano quasi ad ogni lancio, in una giornata si possono tranquillamente catturare 100-150 pesci a due passi dal bungalow e dal fornito bar, quando si è stanchi ci si piazza su uno sdraio e si ricomincia subito dopo.... cosa si può volere di più?

We also did some "light game" with a Yamaga Blanks Blue Current 78, with lure weight of 1-12 grams .... almost every cast generated an attack, in a day we can easily catch 100-150 fishes at two fotsteps from the bungalow and the well furnished bar; when tired you can just relax on a hammock to restart soon later..... what els could we desire?

19th-28th of May we organize a fishing cruise in the sudanese Red Sea; a place untouched and rich of fishes. We stay in a catamaran mother boat with all conforts, and fish from smaller boats, or, if desired from shore; in fact it's one of the few places in the world where it's possible to target dogtooth tunas while wading from shore and casting over the dropoff, a fantastic experience. 
Popping and Jigging from the boat offer a great variety of predators, beginning with GTs, doggies, Napoleon Wrasse and many other species.

QUANTO PESANO ?

Non mi riferisco alle nostre catture, ma al peso delle ancorette che andiamo a collegare ai nostri artificiali.
Essendo curioso mi sono armato di bilancina di precisione e ho verificato alcuni modelli strong che usiamo spesso nella pesca tropicale, sapendo che un peso differente può cambiare il movimento dei nostri artificiali.
Ecco i risultati:

Being curious I took my precision balance to check the weight of some treble hooks I often use in the tropical fishing, knowing that the different weight can affect the movement of our lures.

FRUGANDO SUL MERCATO: LUCANUS JIG

E' un jig un po' particolare, un kabura che fa l'occhiolino ai classici bucktail, nato per adattare certe tecniche giapponesi al mercato americano con un'esito che, guardandolo bene, a me piace proprio.
Mi pare siano almeno un paio di annetti che è presente sul mercato, ma, come spesso accade, Shimano non ha mai pensato di importarlo anche da noi, peccato secondo me.
Fatto sta che, avvicinandosi l'epoca del mio annuale pellegrinaggio in Guinea Bissau, e essendomi quindi dedicato a raccogliere un po' di kabura tra quelli più adatti alla pesca attiva che dovremo fare là, mi è caduto di nuovo l'occhio su questo interessante jig e me ne sono quindi procurato una manciata nei pesi da 60 e 80 grammi, più adatti ad essere "nuotati" in quelle acque alla ricerca di ombrine e carangidi.

Lui di origine esce con un range di pesi dai 60 ai 200 grammi, e non è escluso che in futuro proverò anche i fratelloni maggiori in altri ambienti.
La sagoma della testa sembra ben disegnata per potere essere usata non solo a fondo ma pure a mezzacqua, e questa è una delle caratteristiche principali che cercavo per un kabura tropicale. Lo skirt è giusto, le appendici in gomma sono importanti e robuste e dovrebbero rilasciare le giuste vibrazioni, l'occhio glow aiuterà di certo nelle acque africane profonde e velate... quello che proprio non va sono gli ami troppo piccoli, ma vedremo poi come sistemare la faccenda; non è un difetto di progetto è che semplicemente l'uso che ne voglio fare è un poco improprio e non ha molto a che vedere con l'idea originale.

Una curiosità, perchè un secondo aggancio del filo sotto? Presto detto grazie all'opuscoletto Shimano: per un paio di montaggi strani "tandem rig" e dropshot che invero non sono molto consigliati nelle acque dove mi recherò, ma giusto per completezza di informazione ecco qui un'immagine ufficiale:

Detto tutto ciò, ho voluto cambiare l'amo: ho tagliato il piccolo assist e ho sfilato da sotto il solid ring di fermo, molto ben fatto lo scasso di alloggiamento del suddetto che lascia un fondo pulito e liscio all'esca:

Come sostituire il complesso amo/assist è intuitivo, come materiali, vista la non remota possibilità di imbattermi in pescioni ho scelto un singolo amo Decoy Grand Pike JS3 taglia 2/0, pur potendo salire ancora come dimensioni senza compromettere la presentazione, e come cordaggio uno Zylon knot di YGK taglia "25", come solid ring l'originale è perfetto; per la costruzione dell'assist ci sono tanti tutorial sul web, magari in futuro ne facciamo uno anche noi.

L'effetto finale è questo e devo dire che mi piace un bel po':

Pronto per incontri seri, magari addobbato con qualche vibrante gommetta.
Se si comporterà bene a Kerè magari si guadagnerà qualche tuffo in shore jigging in Sudan, ma è un'altra storia.
